SF audio
First of all, thanks to all who responded with my CD rom problem. Now, I've got the omega 1gb external zip drive with the catridge. I hook it up via the sczi port, set it's ID to 4. The Akai ID is 2. I select "update" to prompt the akai to search for disks. It takes over a minute. And when it does show, it says the drive has no disk. I hit "info" and it tells me that the drive has no disk, but clearly it does. I'm running akai version 2.14. so......???? FrankieP
Some suggestions for you... Do you power up the Iomega zip drive first before the S5K? If not then you should. Any peripheral you attach to the S5K's SCSI connection should be powered up first before turning the S5K on. Check to make sure you have the S5K's SCSI terminated in the back. Try to designate your S5K's SCSI ID number below the daisy chain. Currently I have a Plextor CDROM (ID2), an Orb Drive (ID3), and a Seagate 4.6 gig internal drive (ID4), S5K on ID6 and terminated. All working together and very stable. Also, is the zip cartidge been formatted for use with the S5K?

How do you format the jaz disk???? How do you format the jaz disk????You can do it with S5K or your computer if you got scsi connection for it. The S5K (version 2 OS) uses FAT32 formatting of hard disks. I usually use my PC to format zip disks to be used with my S5K, that way I ensure the disk will be read by both and backing up would go smoothly. But you can do it with the S5K... Go under UTILITIES, press DISK UTILS (F10), press DISK LIST (F8), you should be able to see the Iomega Zip drive and highlight it, you can now choose QUICK FORMAT or FULL FORMAT. QUICK FORMAT will perform a superficial format and will simply set up the disks directory; FULL FORMAT will not only set up the disk but will also mark bad blocks so that they cannot be used. QUICK FORMAT is faster but FULL FORMAT is more thorough, though slower. When you're ready, press FORMAT DISK (F13). Hope this helps.

I set the scsi ID to 1, and the akai to 0. Also, the jazz drive keeps spinning, pretty much all the time.....any other ideas? Dave Horne
Termination switch on the Akai correctly set? That's the only thing I can come up with outside of bad cable or a bad unit. No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message. In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments. When it spins up, are you hearing any clicking sound? Also, when you insert the cartridge, does the led indicate that it is ready for use (most of the time it turns green from yellow)? If it doesn't then sorry, but you might need to come in contact with the person who you bought it from for a replacement drive. it clearly shows that you have a defective drive. Phait
Try the drive on your PC first - if all works, then somethings up w/ the board.
b_3guy
I'm sorry to say but Iomega products are just junk. We went down the road with Iomega products, nothing but trouble. I had my zip drive replaced 6 times, the company just kept replacing them. The last one I gave away to a technician, still not working. All our jazz cartridges have bad blocks on them & we don't know if it's the drive or the cartridges because we'll have to buy a cartridge to find out. Used to be able type Iomega in a search engine & see all the threads complaining about Iomega products. I thought there was a class action suit against the company. I think I might have a bad drive, after fiddling around with it....paid $25 on Ebay for the drive and 7 catridges, so not a big loss.... Let me think about what you need. What comes to mind is a SCSI hard drive in a case. As I said let me think about it or a USB to SCSI adapter & use USB on your computer. FrankieP
Browse around eBay for scsi Glyph drives. If you wanna go with a more removable medium, then i'd recommend Castlewood\'s Orb Drive . It can store 2.2 gigs of data. I have one for 3 years now and i'm still using it. Another option for you would be to get the USB interface board for your S5K. Use it in tandem with the AkSys software and your PC/MAC, you eliminate the need for an external drive to store your samples and programs. You can simply save everything to your PC/Mac's hard drive.
