Dave Pierce
KCers, A really great thing happened a couple of weeks ago. My old boss from OmniSky called me up and offered me a job with his consulting company. I accepted, and my first engagement is running IT Operations for a really exciting startup in Mtn View called Tapwave. The product is cool, and I think it has a decent chance of succeeding. Its a gaming and entertainment hand-held device for the young adult market, and it runs Palm OS (think GameBoy for grownups -- optimized for games, but it's a Palm too, and plays MP3, DVDs, and is a photo album). The company is a bunch of ex-Palm people (like OmniSky was). What's even more exciting for me personally is getting to go back to my sweet spot from a career perspective, and working with really great people that I already know well. If any of you find yourself needing help defining and executing an IT roadmap, call us up! Stand Sure Systems OK, no more plugs... --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. Dave Pierce
Well since this startup ran for over a year with almost no IT support at all, and now they've got an experienced team looking after their needs, I think in this case I'm the outsourcing angel. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. Does it run DooM?Well, the folks here are being pretty hush-hush about what games that will be available on launch day. But let's just say that old-school gamers will not be disappointed. Go to www.tapwave.com if you're curious about this product. If the answers to your questions are found there, then I know I'm not breaking my NDA. And I don't have to keep up with the marketing people about what's public and not. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. Dave The Rave
Nice one Dave....sounds like a good position - you certainly seem happy about it! Let's hope the entreprenurial start-up environment continues to improve around here - I'd like to do another start-up sometime in the next couple of years so that I can retire in peace by the time I'm 50! Sounds like the wrong reason to do a startup Dave. 1 out of 10 survive, not good odds. But I love startups -- the crazy energy and the sense of *building* something is just so cool. However, I always make sure I'm getting paid up front. Options are all fine and well, but I'm not interested in taking a pay cut for extra options. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I already did one that succeeded (got bought by a much larger company). I waited and looked for over a year to find just the right opportunity that time. I can do the same thing again, I'm sure. Stay tuned. :DTR Cambrian Guitars
