Motion Sound KP-200S

Recommended Posts

Hey all -

I'm thinking about buying one of these amps unseen, untouched and worst of all unheard by me. I live in an absolute dead zone when it comes to music instrument (esp. keyboard stuff) retail - so auditioning an amp is kind of out of the question. I recently played through a pair of Mackie SRM450's and loved the sound, however prefer (I Think) the convenience of the Motion Sound combo amp (which also runs stereo).

Anyone with experience??? I'll be running a PC88, PC2R, Rhodes 73 and other various vintage synths depending on the gig. Rock to pop to jazz to theatre to weddings. Also for sound reinforcement at the hosu during practice/composing time.

Weasels ripped my flesh. Rzzzzzzz.

I purchased the KP200S unseen and unheard. My first impression was it was a little bigger than I'd hoped. Like you, I liked the idea of stereo in one piece and was looking at a pair of 10" EON G2's.

Its just a little longer front-to-back and a little heavier than I expected. Carrying it down the flight of stairs to my basement takes a little focus because I can't see my feet.

Other than that, the amp is great. I haven't played it that much but I was impressed by how much of a low end the 2 10's put out! The built-in mixer and XLR outs are super-convenient. I keep a CD player and Mic patched in at all times at home, in addition to my 2 keyboards (in stereo).

The stereo seperation/image is good - I have it on a stand angeled up at me, Motion Sound recommends chest high, 2 ft. directly behind you. The Expander knob seems to affect the image when you get it up to 6 or 7, but the volume increases as well.

I really enjoy having the seperate EQ's and volume knobs for each channel. It has decent loudness/power and is perfect for monitor within a band, or as only sound source for quiet-medium gigs.

There is a noticable hiss in ultra-quiet (practice) environments when the volume is up and you're not playing anything.

It would be nice if it were tube, but its not as big or heavy as the KBR-3D and I can always throw a Pro-3t on top if I acquire one. Its a good fit for me.

This amp is like the bottom part of my KBR-3d. I love mine (Kbr-3d). The stereo expander feature is very nice, especially on EP's and pads. Tone is accurate; much better than the run of the mill keyboard amps you usually see at Sam Ash / Guitar center..Are you really sure you don't want the leslie and tube overdrive that comes in the KBR-3d???

I bought it without ever seeing or hearing it. I love it and my bandmates really love it. Does wonders for stereo piano samples. Our guitarist who's also an organist is a big time purist when it comes to leslies but he thinks my electro through it is pretty close (coming from him, it's a big compliment because he is a leslie-or-death guy - I would be too if I had a leslie)

It gives stereo piano samples so much presence. Plus the side handles makes it easy to carry. Makes a huge difference compared to the roland kc 500 i used to have

Where in eastern Kentucky, ELP? I lived in Lexington for three years. I don't envy you having to shop for gear out yonder in the hills.

Don't feel bad, I live near San Francisco and I can't find any dealers who stock the K200S! Uh, yeah, San Francisco, ever heard of it? I think a FEW people live out that way ...

Can anyone tell me what these amps sound like compared to 2 JBL EON 10"s, or 2 Barbetta 31Cs? I'm also thinking about the Mackie SRM 350s (2 of 'em, 10"), but they're not out yet, and I kinda favor the idea of simplicity ie, not having to run thru a mixer and then to power source.

If the Roland KC350s didn't sound so boxy I'd just do that. But they're really not too good ... all I can try out around here is Roland, Peavey and Crate. What's up with that?? Oh, and the big daddy Motion SOund, but it's way out of budget ...

Guitar Center has the JBL EON10 and will have the Mackie SRM 350 when they ship. My friend has the Barbetta 31C. I will be comparing them all together when the SRM 350 arrive. However my research is indicating that the FBT Max 2A 10" 1" biamped 200 watts 50 watts speakers sound better than the JBLs and Mackies. The Motion sound is too bulky for me and so are my Mackie SRM 450 speakers which I'm selling.
