skyy38
Which hardware unit has the best that technology has to offer? I'm talking about orchestral sounds that are true and don't repeat the same mistakes of the past(like brass that sounds like car horns or timpani that just sound like *yuk*) It doesn't need to be the most expensive item out there, nor the "coolest"(whatever *that* means). It just has to sound authentic. Does such a beast exist? Or am I way ahead of my time? Thanks for your help!
Mark Zeger
I know it's not a module, but you'd probably only be happy with a PC + a ton of RAM + Giga + some orchestral libraries. The Vienna Symphonic Library is the one getting all the praise these days, but it's currently $3000 for the whole CD-ROM collection. Still, it's impressive to hear. For a module, I still like many of the Kurzweil ROM samples. I've heard goods things about the Roland orchestral expansion cards for the VX modules. RABid
For a hardware synth module I suggest the Roland XV-5080. There are two SRX ROM's for orchestra and string sections at 64 meg each. The unit comes with 4 sample CD's of orchestra and brass samples. Add 128 meg of RAM and a 128 meg memory card, then load up the samples that best complament the ROM's and save them to the memory card. Robert This post edited for speling. The Roland is very good for orchestral sounds. The Black Knight always triumphs!
ELP71
The Roland is nice, and I like the Orchestral expansion on the Kurzweil PC2 series. NOTE: This is a different set than the Orchestral ROM bolck on the K2600's Weasels ripped my flesh. Rzzzzzzz.
Donnie
I would go with the Roland XV series because of the good stock sounds that it has plus the expansion cards are VERY good for the limited ram that they have. I use one of them here as well. dc
Albert
sky38, if you are talking about a studio application, no gigging, then a Giga sampler along with some major orchestral libraries would give you the most realism. If you are needing a setup for gigging live then nothing can beat the Roland XV-5080 with RAM and expansion boards in two rack spaces, in my opinion.
