As someone who doesn't sing, this looks incredible

As someone who does sing (or at least appreciates what is involved in singing), I can't wait to see the garbage that's coming out as a result of this. Maybe I'm being pessimistic - then I remember Cher's "believe" and the puke trail that came after it with the copy cats.

I can see the use in coming up with 'scratch vocals' - I would possibly use it, and then record with a 'real' singer. Defintely help with demos.

Or even for use in videogames, cartoons, stuff like that.

Remind me not to tune the radio to top40 stations after this comes out :)

I, for one, probably wouldn't use it for what is intended. I'd probably find some neat vocoding type stuff to do though!!

Very cool. The detractors have to be the ones blessed with decent singing voices. (Kind of reminds me of a well stacked friend asking why anyone would ever need a boob job. :D )

The concept almost sounds like a vocalist version of Virtual Guitarist. I didn't see a price, but if it's in the same range (~$250), I'm definitely in. If they price it much greater than $500, I'll be watching for it on Kazaa. :D

I was wondering when the forums would start buzzing about Vocaloid. It seemed to slip in under the RADAR during Musikmesse, but it sure received a lot of press in print coverage afterwards.

It only makes sense that initial attempts to turn a computer into a singer would be created through a blending of human and synthetic elements via sampling and synthesis. Most of the articles I read implied that the results were good enough to create convincing ensemble background harmony vocals, but that lead vocals at best would contain a few telltale signs that a computer was involved.

Personally, I've only heard the "Amazing Grace" demo so far. I found it interesting, but I don't know how useful the technology in current form would be outside of an electronica or demo context.

After my experience with Melodyne, I'm afraid I'm a bit jaded about new technologies quickly becoming professional quality. On the other hand, Yamaha (the maker of Vocaloid) has a lot more resources and experience than does Celemony (the maker of Melodyne).

Without a doubt, this will at least be a product to keep an eye on...

Best,

Geoff

It wasn't that bad accually.

If you use autotune to the extreem or the TC voice prism, then you got a pretty good idea what it sounds like.

At the messe they only had the stand alone version working and it sang in Japanese and English.

Depending on the sample of the vocal phoneteic, and the tables that translate what you write into it, well it can sing any language, so who knows how long before the trekies get a hand on it and make it sing in Klingon.

For the curious the gist of it as I understood was this, after to tell it which notes and words it will sing, it translates the text into phonics, it then accesses samples of phonics (real singer), moves that into the time frequency domain, mixes matchs, formant shift to create smoothes type of blend, renders WAV or whatever file type.

They were planning a VST version.

It is an interesting idea.

This does sound very cool. As someone who can't sing, I see the benefits of something like this. To someone who can sing, I can somewha understand the frustration. One of my biggest and hardest problems is to overcome was singing. Not only competetly but also while playing. To those who can do either I envy and greatly respect you.

I'm curious - was this by any chance a collaboration between Yamaha and Skynet? Humans are outre', I guess.
