Mike Rafone Posted December 5, 2002 Posted December 5, 2002 Can you believe it? AOPEN put a TUBE on one of their latest computer motherboards! I believe they are calling it the tubesound! http://www.aopen.com/tech/techinside/Tube.htm You know, Slash of Guns-n-Roses appeared on stage with Hector Ruiz of AMD and the CEO of Gibson at the COMDEX trade show last month. He had a Les Paul with an Ethernet jack on it!!! Sounds like a perfect match! (Carl Lawrence)
ECBRules Posted December 5, 2002 Posted December 5, 2002 Hmm, i wonder if independant dsp card companies like Powered plug in's would catch on to this idea. Think about a pci expansion bus with different cards for effects, like a tube compressor, or a tube distortion card. Meanwhile, I could use a good tube right now lol xx) Maybe Asus could eventually have a motherboard that burns potpurri, or intel could have an IDE microwave oven. (but don't put your cdr's in the microwave, we all know what happens when you do that!) They could all learn a thing or two from the koolance case, they could water cool the tubes. Or maybe you could just put the two together and you'd have a nice little bong.
I guess they figure todays comps/fans are not loud/hot enough.Anyway it's just another C-Media based crapblaster type consumer built in audio with additional heat.I don't know any high-end tube/pre manufacturers losing sleep over this. This is pretty old news by the way. Franknputer Posted December 5, 2002 Posted December 5, 2002 Weird...my first impression is that they won't have a whole lot of plate voltage for that thing, so who knows how it'll sound? But the big problem I see is placement - it looks as if the tube is right below the PCI slots. In a tower case, you'll end up cooking the card above the tube.
ECBRules Posted December 5, 2002 Posted December 5, 2002 Thats a good point you can't do much with 12v http://www.kennyruyter.com/old/cowmix.mp3 <- Cowbell fever REMIX oh damn!!! http://www.eastcoastbands.com aka: ECBRules . thisOLDdude . keny . Scooch
Philip OKeefe Posted December 5, 2002 Posted December 5, 2002 Old news... this has been out there for a while. IMO, it's really silly. BTW, there are ways to increase the voltage coming from the power supply... but then again, why would you want to? A computer with a vacuum tube? Ridiculous!
Veracohr Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002
What's that Silver Stuff on the Glass? The silver deposit is called the "getter" and is there to help increase the vacuum in the tube.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but how on Earth could silver stuff on the glass increase the vaccuum? And I don't think the vaccuum is the important part, it's what happens inside the vaccuum.
Professional audio equipment also deploys the tube as a preferred amplification device. One can even find tubes in digital-to-analog converter designs. The vacuum tube is a natural choice for these music-associated vehicles to depend on.
It's a good thing they didn't ask any audio engineers whether they agree, eh? Why is the freakin' tube their anyway? It didn't actually say anywhere what the tube is amplifying. I suppose this sums it all up:
Before we go further, someone undoubtedly will ask, Why the vacuum tube? A quick answer would be: The tube looks cool!
"And then you have these thoughts in the back of your mind like 'Why am I doing this? Or is this a figment of my imagination?'" http://www.veracohr.com
lakeside studios Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002 Well I think it's a good idea.I put a tube in the engine management computer of my Accord, and it's a much warmer drive now. Big Hat. No Cattle. http://www.theshrinks.com/
jeffbayson Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002 They put a tube in my arm at the hospital. It made me feel punchy and warm.
jeffbayson Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002 Crap. Lakeside made the same joke first. :(
Jeff Leites Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002 Why back in the old days, all computers had in 'em were tubes. Yeah, the bytes had a lot more satisfying crunch to 'em then. :D My Web Site - Tunes - Pictures - Guitar Projects - Native American Style Flute Projects - Hard Rock Cafe Guitar Pins My Eclectic YouTube Channel

phaeton Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002 Yep.. old news. I pretty much wrote it off as a joke around the time i saw it. Of course, for them to do this right, it would have to be in its own external enclosure with its own pwr supply. Then bridge it in with usb/firewire/insert_your_favourite_of_the_year or its own dedicated port to an internal sound card. However, IIRC Guitar Amps are the #1 market for vaccuum tubes. They're used sparingly in a few other things (mostly high-end stereo equipment), so the more ridiculous things they put tubes in, and the more people run out and try to be the first guy on the block with a tube-driven alarm clock or whatever, it slows down the eventual death of tube manufacturing. just my 2 bits. but can you imagine waking to the sweetness of a tube-driven alarm? Dr. Seuss: The Original White Rapper . WWND?
Mike Rafone Posted December 6, 2002 Author Posted December 6, 2002 I was pretty shocked (did I make a pun?) but mostly amused at the whole idea. Then I started thinking about the person(s) that talked management into allowing them to make the thing at all. No doubt they put quite a sum into making those things. I have truly seen it all now :)
