Soundscape Studios.
I was just curious to know what percentage of us are actually doing this full-time. I would assume most of us are part-time, with a 'real' job to bring in the steady check.
Tim Clark
I've got a 9-5 as a software developer, although eventually I plan on migrating to some job that's a little more lenient for a gigging schedule, something like freelance web design. If I could live off of the meager paychecks I get playing 2 gigs a week, I certainly wouldn't be doing this Doesn't help that I live in an overpriced area. I think I may be forced to fade away typing up computer code for a while... My music is like a movie for your ears - Frank Zappa
ksoper
100% music income. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. k. 9 Moog things, 3 Roland things, 2 Hammond things and a computer with stuff on it
coyote
I *used* to make my living entirely from giging..... then I got married. Strange how these coincidences happen. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. Geoff Grace
My income is entirely from music as well. As to whether it's fulltime, part-time, or overtime, the answer is all of the above. Botch.
I lived off of music full-time for one summer (regional touring band). That was enough. Its outside my comfort zone to have my livelihood dependant on other musicians!!! I played every weekend for most of the next 15 years, and now we play no more than two weekends a month. That's just right for me. Day job, I'm a mechanical engineer for ejection seats on Air Force aircraft, and also still serving in the AF Reserves. billjv
I used to do a combination of audio-for-video mixing and music for TV and jingles, but I've since moved into multimedia work at a corporate cube farm. Every once in a great while I'll still do some music for a video we shoot or something. I actually didn't do much playing at all for about 4-5 years after quitting music/audio full time, but now I do write and record for myself and others part-time. If the right opportunity came along I'd do it full-time again, but for now life is good. It's actually kinda weird, I'm one of the few people I know who is doing both my college major and minor as my day job and hobby, 14 years after graduating. Jeff Irok
P/T... I'm a bureacrat for the State during the day...I play out a couple times a month with the band plus do a lot of home recording. I'm currently working on playing solo (lounge stuff) because I'm too antsy. Playing out a couple times a month was ok when the kids were younger, but now they're a bit older & I have a little more free time. Plus, the only way I get money for gear is through gigging...! Rod S
Nah - my day gig is being an engineer manager. It pays the bills and buys my gear. I love music, but I'm not sure I wanted to do it as a profession (my hats is tipped to those who do though, don't get me wrong). Current projects involve some home recording, and a voice/piano duet with a friend (I play keys, she sings). At our current crappy rate, that's around 18 gigs a month just to cover rent. Ugh...Looks like I'm stuck in coding land! Magpel
Nah, for a while I was making a decent supplemental income composing for local theater and corporate multimedia, but that's really hard work to find these days. Right now I have three different project goings, two live, one studio, all of them unpaid. Strangely, even at my "advanced age," I still harbor ambitions... Tusker
I can relate John. I have a day job as a management consultant. I'd love to do music for money but I have two kids and with what I can make from music right now the change in income would be traumatic. Still, I have dreams. And one day ... (it may be when I retire) I will do music full-time. Best, Jerry
steadyb
I feel the same. Get my two kids safely to adulthood, and then I'll feel good about jumping all the way back in to doing music full time. Of course, I hope whatever I'm doing musically in 15 or 20 years will still be worth a damn.

I'd rather put my money towards a mortgage, than throw it away into the lanlord's pockets. Oh, did I mention that property taxes are $12,000 a year? To add insult to injury, we (Orthodox Jews) don't even send our kids to public school - which is what property tax pays for. Private school is another $6,000 a year. Multiply that by 3 or 4 kids. Double ouch.
Rick K.
I'd LOVE to be able to do this full time! I'm a branch manager with a commerical and residental lender during the day.
