the coolest looking synth

Recommended Posts

OKAy, so, which do you think is the coolest looking keyboard of all time??

They all look so undescribably inspiring, amazong, and all that good stuff , to me , so it's hard for me to narrow it down to just one.

My personal favs are the pentaphonic gleeman

Roland JP-8080, Korg prophecy, Hartman Neuron, and the maroon Waldorf Q+. If my soon to be ion was yellow or bright ass green , it may have made the list also. :o:o:o;):P:P

1. Waldorf Wave (in the black version) & Korg MS-20

2. Minimoog

3. Roland Jupiter 6

Runner up: Alesis Ion. The longer I have it, the more I like the design. Who designed Ion?

:keys: My Music:thx: I always wondered what happened after the fade out?

Hard to tell. I like so many of them. But there was a time I knew. I remember seeing this at the Yamaha synth shop and thinking "Wow, that is the coolest thing I've ever seen" It's a Korg PS3300. :thu:

The Synclavier 9600 with the Ebony Keyboard

Emu EIII Keyboard

SCI Prophet 10

Yamaha DX-1

Matrix 12

Fairlight Series III

I hate the trend nowadays to list the features of the synth under the logo on the front panel:

"Rolaha QZ500, 64 voice, additive, multieffect workstation"

Can you imagine anyone buying a guitar with "Fender Stratocaster, 6 string, 3 single coil electric guitar" on the body? :)

"For instance" is not proof.

Agreed. Way cool looking synth. So was it's little brother, the JP-6 (especially in low lighting conditions).

I also like:

Prophet-10

Matrix-12

Gleeman Pentaphonic

Yamaha CS-80

EMS Synthi 100

...and most modular systems. They just look so damn sci-fi - especially when they're wired... :thu:

The topic said "coolest synth," then the message said "coolest keyboard." This may count in both categories, if you consider the original function of this organ, which was to simulate an orchestra. It's the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ, in Philadelphia, located within the Hechts department store.

Hey, for a long time I had the PPG Wave 2.2 on the top of my Chroma... :D Unfortunately, they're both gone by now.

The Ion..?! I'm sure it sounds good, but it looks a bit like medical equipment to me...

The most visually arresting synth I've ever played was the Yamaha DX1. Big, majestic, alien and fascinating. I also like the looks of the Chroma, Synclavier (with the Sequential keyboard), Minimoog, JP8, Virus Indigo...

Yea, but didn't you look at the DX7 and see "Digital Programmable Algorithm Synthesizer" and say, "F*ckin' cool." like I did?

Me, too, and me too.

Actually, the rack where those two keybaords lived had a Mini on top of a JP8 on top of a PPG Wave 2.2 on top of a Chroma. Only the Mini remains...

Just a small clarification. That department store is now a Lord & Taylor. It was originally a locally owned store called Wanamaker's. Through many buying and sellings it was a Hects but is now owned by the May Company and is a Lord & Taylor now. As I recall it is one of the largest organs in the country and was not original to the store. The building it resides in dates to the 1920's I think...if I'm wrong it's not by much. The "Grand Court" in which it resides is cut into the middle of the building and rises up 4 or 5 floors. Every year at Christmas I take the family to see the Holiday light show there which dates from the early 60's. Ever since 9/11 after the show a large flag is raised and "God Bless America" is played on the organ. They also usually play it before the light show. This thing is really cool!! It seems to make the whole place reverberate!! Just a history lesson from a Philly native.

1911, according to the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ. And you're right, it wasn't original to the store--it came from the St Louis World's Fair. (I didn't know that.) But it's the second largest organ in the country, the largest being (or used to be) in the Atlantic City Convention Hall. I've sat at the Wanamaker console several times, and even brushed my hands across the keys. (It was under renovation at the time and most of it was disabled.) Quite a rush... I appreciate the native info--I'm a South Jersey boy, myself.

Was wondering where you got the picture? Now that you mention it I have heard of Friends of the Wanamaker organ....maybe they have a website? Didn't know that the AC Convention Center was the largest. Thought I had heard at one time that the organ at West Point was the largest but I could obviously be wrong. Maybe West Point is in the same company at least. Since you've been there you know what a great old building it is in. Too bad you didn't get to play it...like I said it's awesome! I grew up in the Philly suburbs myself and now live in Chester County near Longwood Gardens.

Another Rado fan here.

Movado Museum watch guy here. It doesn't get a whole lot less cluttered than that...

On the Ion, hold the Red Bank button and press Home to see who did what.

As for coolest looking synth, my short list would have to include the Jupiter 8.

I also really like the keyboards Axel Hartmann designed for Waldorf - especially the Wave and XTk.

Jupiter 8 - because of the rainbow of buttons.

Gleeman Pentaphonic - clear version only.

Emu Proteus - the original keyboard because of the round buttons.

My cousin has a restored pump organ that is beautiful and functional. It has a lot of intricate wood carving and is the most beautiful instrument I have ever seen.

As for the Rhodes Chroma, I never cared for the look but I used to get a warm feeling seeing mine topped off with a MemoryMoog. I would love to have them back.
