Mark, I wish I could be there. We had such a great time at the place you recommended in April; and it would have been great to go back, meet you, and have a Jan Folkson Quintet Plus One reunion! :D Unfortunately, this month is just too early for us to go back.

October, however, is another matter... ;)

Have fun, everyone! :thu:

Best,

Geoff

Dan, Jan and Magpel:

It would be great you see you. If 8pm works, let's pick a place. I'm staying near Carnegie Hall (nice that they built a concert hall by the Carnegie Deli). Any spot from there toward the Theater District probably works.

(BTW, John: I'll be in Newburgh the weekend of the 8/2-3 if you can't make it into the city.)

I don't think I'll be in NYC around AES, but definitely another time in October.

I was thinking drinks more than dinner. I figured if Jan and I are both in the Theater District/Times Square area, it would be easy to meet somewhere around there. Iridium has trumpeter Wallace Roney with pianist Geri Allen, but that could turn into an expensive evening.

If it's easier for anyone coming from Jersey or Upstate, then let's go with something on the Upper West Side. If we want to hear some music, I found something interesting at a club with no cover. Meeting at 8p and catching a 9p set might work.

Smoke, 2751 Broadway at 106th St.

Heartland Brewery is probably a good choice. If Jan checks in, maybe he can suggest a place around Times Square or a little west of there if that helps Mag, Dan, and Soundscape.

Soundscape, can you join us for a drink at a non-Kosher restaurant/bar? The only Kosher restaurant I know near Times Square is the Le Marais steakhouse on W46th bet. 6th & 7th. There must be many others around there to cater to the Diamond District.

Well, I think you should first decide what kind of night out you are looking at. Le Mareis is a more upscale joint, where you could spend $45 on a meal - good food though.

If you are just thinking of a drink, I could definitely join you guys at a non-kosher place, and get a coke or something (or a brewski).

If you decide to eat, however, there are many excellent places around Times Square.

Here's an idea, but the menu seems a little expensive for simple bar food:

McGee's

240 West 55th St (bet. Broadway and 8th Ave.)

New York, NY 10019

(www.mcgeespub.com though I don't trust a "pub" with it's own website)

Heartland Brewery (either on 6th & 51st, or 43rd in Times Sq) is still is an option.

I know there are plenty of neighborhood places. I just can't find them online (which adds to their character). Jan, maybe you can think of one.

Sorry to intrude on this as I won't be in the US.

When I lived near NYC, I would frequent a neighborhood restaurant at 80Th and B'way. It was called Teacher's, I believe, and had a lot of character and was reasonably priced. As I recall it was not far from Zabars. There was also a jazz club close by (90th and B'way(?) where I heard Dick Hyman perform. This is going back more than ten years so that restaurant may not still be there.

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

Can we agree to Thur 7/24 8pm @ McGee's on 55th bet. B'way & 8th?

I'm open to other ideas, but if there's nothing better to consider, let's go there. If it sucks, we'll head elsewhere after the first round.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it. :thu:

I'm good at not being in the New York area when you do these things! Oh well, have fun!

Dave, if I've got to go back to Scotland again in October, I'll probably be doing so via the East Coast and will be attending the AES show, so I'm up for your idea.
