Superbobus
Just saw our national guitar hero Jesse van Ruller perform with Sam Yahel on the North Sea Jazz Festival... DAMN! Later he was playing with Joshua Redman's Elastic Band. This guy is unbelieveable! He was playing bass pedals on the Hammond, or bass lines on a synth, playing Rhodes, synth leads, B3... Talk about independance! Check out Redman's recording Elastic. http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life. moogboy
sam yahel is totally awesome. i saw him with joshua redman and he killed it. i heard him on the record first (elastic) and i really liked him. its not easy playing with joshua redman and brian blade, and playing trio... playing all the bass parts, and he totally nails it. he's a pretty 'young' guy on the scene (early 30s i think) and i think he's in the right direction. plus, he got a shout-out from norah jones at the grammies, for playing on her record. BTW, Jeff Ballard played drums on that gig instead of Brian Blade. Blade sounds incredible on the record, but check out this Ballard dude. http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life. Mark Zeger
I recently heard "The Birthday Song", from Joshua Redman's "Elastic", which has a very cool Rhodes groove. Sounds like an album worth buying. The only time I saw Redman was on his "Wish" tour in a small college theater for under 1000 people. He had a bunch of lightweights in his touring band back then. Pat Metheny, Christian McBride, and (IIRC) Ed Thigpen.

The only reason I think it wasn't Higgins is that I think he became ill not long after "Wish" was made, and eventually passed away in the mid-'90s.
