I just heard Joe Zawinul played here in Groningen (ten minuts away from me) and i missed the show.

There was a free festival last week here and he played there.

i was unaware of the fact that he was playing.

I don't know much of his work, but a couple of guys here actual see him as God himself so i am really pissed. :(:(:(

Happens to me all the time. I work in New York, and I always hear about the free concert that I missed with fill-in-big-name-artist-here. I need to find a good source of information on the local concert scene. I always hear about them too late.

The Black Knight always triumphs!

Ouch! I knew he was playing but I couldn't go there. I didn't see him on the North Sea programme.

Well, what I meant is that I hope I´ll feel the same way 24 years from now, like Mark... BTW, I may have seen Jaco - there´s a homeless guy in my town that looks remarkably like mr. Pastorius. A bassist I play with pointed it out to me, after seeing the guy several times - the homeless people used to eat in the same place every day...

Actually, I think that concert was in 1980 because it was around the time of the "8:30" and "Night Passage" albums. I remember hearing the song "Night Passage" and "Rockin' In Rhythm", and the most of the other material was from "Heavy Weather" and "Mr. Gone". They also played "Black Market" and, of course, Jaco's solo segment "Slang" with him blowing hard over his DDL loops (including "Purple Haze" ).

It was one of those concerts that permanently changes your views on music. I think Magpel might have been at that concert, too.

And, somewhere in a box in my basement, there is a framed ticket envelope autographed by Zawinul, Shorter, and Jaco. I caught them as they got on their bus after the concert.

I saw Joe Zawinul and his "Syndicate" 3 years ago in a great jazz club I frequent. We had some drinks together after the show, he likes sweet schnapps.

The sound was more than twice as loud as usual, it was painful and I nearly went deaf. Much louder than the recent Yellow Jackets show.

Joe did not solo, only comped. It was all about rhythm and texture, not much happened melodically.

I believe Victor Bailey was on bass and a virtuoso African drummer on the trap set.

I enjoyed Joe's work with Weather Report ten times more. It was because Weather Report included Wayne Shorter on sax and providing interesting melodies. I don't enjoy music much if it is lean on melody, especially loud fusion.

I saw Little Feat (with Lowell George). During the encore a skinny dude in red pants sat-in with the band and play the most unreal, funkiest bass I ever heard. It was Jaco! I found out that he was the bassist with Weather Report and they were performing the next night. I didn't know much about them, but because of Jaco I had to go. Wow! One of the best concerts and groups I had ever seen. I was a fan ever since. I think it was the "8:30" tour.

Fast Forward a few years later:

Jaco was giving a clinic in a San Fransisco music store. I guess he had left WR a few years ago and was just scraping by. He didn't bring a bass and demanded that the store manager provide him with a bass just like his Fender fretless. The store didn't have one and Jaco refused to do the clinic. The manager called my friend who he knew had a Fender fretless that Jaco would like. My friend was more than happy to let Jaco use his bass. Jaco offered to pay him, but he decline and was honoured that he could help out. The clinic went well. Afterwards, Jaco asked him if could still use his bass. Jaco said that he was going to a club that night to jam and invited my friend to hang out with him. Jaco told him that he would meet him later at the club. Well, my friend went to the club that night and Jaco never showed....and my friend never saw his bass again!!

A true story.

Typical Jaco story. I too remember when he was living with a drummer in the Bay Area. Jaco was mentally ill and his playing was often messed up by then.

One time Jaco's kids were visiting him at his hotel and Jaco left for the airport and forgot he had custody of his own kids. Another time when it was time to leave the hotel and they couldn't find Jaco, thye finally found him soaking in the bath tub with all his clothes still on!
