not coaster MODERATOR Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 My new place has popcorn asbestos ceilings throughout. Do any of you guys have experience getting rid of it? It seems that some of the "pro" services are a scam. I just assume do it myself but my wife is against it.

Mats Olsson. Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Yes, get the hell out of that room NOW! (and stay out of there until all asbestos is removed and room is cleaned) Asbestos is scary stuff, it just as harmful as mercury and other extra-bad materials. /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!
Ultravibe Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 You should have it checked out before you pay to get rid of it. There are several different types of asbestos. Several types that are more modern are non-friable and high density, which means they don't crumble very easily - which means the particulate doesn't get into the lungs. In addition, the old products were amphible fiber based whereas the newer ones are chrysotile fibers. Studies show chrysotile fibers present little, if any, risk to health. Anyhow, the sensilble thing is to ascertain if there is actually any risk before you spend gobs of money eliminating something which may not even be a problem. Andrew Mazzocchi
miroslav Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Removal can be expensive and a real PITA. If it's just the ceiling...you can get some liquid polyurethane and apply it over the ceiling to seal it. Then...put a second (sheetrock or whatever) ceiling right over it...and just leave it there. If the asbestos is sealed in...it's not a threat. You can create a bigger hazard removing it...if it isn't done just right. miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
doug osborne Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 If you live in California, you don't even want to know if you have it, because you have to disclose it to future buyers. Sealing it with latex paint is actually a recommended solution. Don't drill into it or break it (or let it fall during an earthquake!). Nailing a new sheetrock ceiling is sometimes not recommended because it releases enough asbestos to be dangerous. Bob Vila Doug Osborne Music on Bandcamp
RM Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002 If you know it's there, technically, having it safely removed is the approved method.. If you don't know it there, get an approved breathing mask, and cover your eyes, head etc... Back when, we scraped off a ton of it, with paper masks and by then, I had inhaled way tons of herb so I chanced it... Don't know if it's even in there still and we re-plastered texture after... Good luck. Rob
