Philip OKeefe Posted December 3, 2002 Posted December 3, 2002 ...and I want to put in a plug for an excellent charity that has been making a difference for a lot of disadvantaged children since 1947. http://www.toysfortots.org/2002/index.html If you're looking for a great way to make some unfortunate child's Christmas a little less bleak, take a moment to drop off a new, unwrapped toy at the nearest collection center - you'll feel great too! Happy Holidays - and Semper Fi!
Kris Posted December 3, 2002 Posted December 3, 2002 Very Nice Mr. O'Keefe! For the last four years I have helped put together and play in Tallahassee's annual "Rockin' for Stockin' Stuffers, Toys for Tots" Show. We've always talked about how every city should do this... We literally rake in TONS of unwrapped toys!!! :D Kris My Band: http://www.fullblackout.com UPDATED!!! Fairly regularly these days... http://www.logcabinmusic.com updated 11/9/04
Philip OKeefe Posted December 4, 2002 Author Posted December 4, 2002 Good for you Kris - I think that's great, and I'm sure a lot of kids appreciate and benefit from you donating your time and talent! :thu:
Steve LeBlanc Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 yep...they've been doing it a long time and it is always productive. If anyone's interested...I have the 1968 Buck Owens sponsored Bakersfield Toys for Tots show available for download. It's about 50 minutes long (the file is 22MB): http://www.leoleblanc.us/bakers.html (scroll down to the bottom of the page) http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
dave64o Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Definitely a great thing to do. I've been doing that for a while now and when we got married my wife also got into it. Once our son was born we changed our M.O. a little and started buying toys specifically for a boy and a girl his age. Our son is 5 1/2 now and this year we asked him if he'd like to use some of his own money to buy something for a boy his age. This way, all three of us get to pick out and buy something out to donate. He was a little skeptical at first but now he really wants to do it, too. What a great kid (sorry, I'm a biased, proud parent!). -------------------- Dave O.
Philip OKeefe Posted December 4, 2002 Author Posted December 4, 2002 That's very cool Dave - I think it's great that you're teaching your child the importance of doing good things for other people - even if it "costs him" a bit. BTW, it's fine to be prowd of your son - he DOES sound like a great kid! :thu:
Mats Olsson. Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Unfortunately, I do not know of any Toys-for-tots program here in Sweden. But a local church organizes flea-markets each saturday, all proceeds go to orphanages and child care. /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!
Kris Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Toys for Tots here in usa is associated with the Marines. But you could easily set up something similar in Sweden, or anywhere for that matter... Here in TLH we get 5 or 6 bands together, put on a big show, get the community businesses to donate raffle items...(it's Xmas and everyone wants to be a part of it so it's easy!) A bunch of guys smoke a shit load of turkeys and ham... Radio stations will donate free advertisement, and the admission fee is one new, unwrapped toy... The Marines take care of the toy distribution. It's a fine time for all! This year we're gonna do Layla with 7 guitar players to cover all the parts properly. Should be interesting! Kris My Band: http://www.fullblackout.com UPDATED!!! Fairly regularly these days... http://www.logcabinmusic.com updated 11/9/04
