Who's in your studio?

So I'm sitting here, on a cold Friday night, and I am pretty bored. But I do have Burning Spear in the house. And that got me thinkin... Isn't it cool that we work in this industry, long and sometimes hard hours, and we get to meet the people who make the music we enjoy (if we're lucky?) Famous or not, sometimes we get to share time and creative energy with people who create for us, society at large, with all that that implies. Maybe I'm crazy... So, who is in your studio? Established stars or someday stars, who's paying the bills? And do you like their music, too? 'Cuz that's all gravy... Peace, wraub

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

We just finished a "song". Right now I have the pleasure to record what I think is the best percussion group of the Netherlands. We recorded a song today around four of those big plastic dustbins, called "kliko's". We recorded to a 2" 24 track and it sounds awesome. Lots of percussion instruments, from small bongo's to huge drums with the size of a small car :) Tomorrow we're gonna record more of these very loud sounds. I love this job :D Peace, Han

Right now I'm preparing to record a live album at my musician's club/performance hall. The guys are an up and coming band, "Travelers." They have a great sound and style; think "Mahivishnu Orchestra Light," or in the veign of the jazzy instrumental Beastie Boys songs. After that I have a cool singer songwriter I'm going to work with- like James Taylor meets Leonard Cohen. Thoroughly entertaining.

Nobody. I recently accepted (am I nuts or what) a field management position on my day job and I was drowning in administrative duties until about 9 p.m. every night. I had to give up the studio for a while. What the f%#k was I thinking? But... Now I'm baaaaack! Let the good times roll! Lawrence

Just finished a band called Products. Mostly your typical heavy radio rock, but a few songs really stick out and they have a cool old-skool metal edge (Maiden, Pantera) thanks to their guitarist that's a bit older than I am.
No matter how good something is, there will always be someone blasting away on a forum somewhere about how much they hate it.

My studio has a baby gate at the door. :freak: So no one is allowed unless you know the password. And that is "Mom said so".

Just last week I was working on some Church Christmas CD of a concert a Church recorded last Christmas. Its nice to see the concert made it to CD. I did the digital editing and mastering and actually had a hand in designing the CD. We also had a classical CD run through here earlier in the year. Anyone heard of Vives or Guridi (Spanish composers). Very beautiful music and lots of editing, some of it was excruciating especially when you`re trying to comp piano parts in the middle of glissandos. Also recorded the first CultureVI (cultureVI.com) CD here earlier. My first rap album and a great learning experience, not exactly my cup of tea but fun anyway. Did some mastering projects for a friend. First stint as a mastering engineer and did a very good job considering (made him happy). Presently I am working on my own CD with a bunch of very good people. Its been a great year for my sutdio. Haven`t had anyone in here yet who is "famous" but we definitely made many people happier and fulfilled some portion of their dreams which is a great thing. Hoping next year will be as fulfilling. We are recording a stone cold killer female artist named Natasha Williamson. Never met in person anyone as good as her. Think Tori Amos meets Sarah M (the lilith fair girl) meets Kate Bush meets Cheryl Crow. No kidding, various studio visitors have guessed all of the above when they heard the tunes. And, she's a true pro to work with. Makes me happy I've got this job.

The most fun project I'm working on now is a local former advertising exec. who has quit his day job because he used to sing at karoake bars and everybody told him how much he sounded like Sinatra. Now, that's all he does. Parties, weddings, big hotel lounges, etc. We just put together a ten song CD for him using ripped karoake tracks for backing. Close your eyes and it's Old Blue Eyes. Really a lot of fun getting that old warm sound on his voice.

I'm pretty much by myself most of the time. I call vocalists in once a week. I've got a jingle writing gig that keeps me so busy that there's no time for anything else.
