Jeff Klopmeyer Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 So, over the years, I've been fortunate to have been exposed to a lot of different kinds of music. And, I've been open-minded enough to allow many different genres of music influence me as a composer. At various stages, I've composed in completely different genres as a result of this influence. Rock, pop, classical, dance, jazz...I've tried a little bit of everything. Recently, I've found myself listening to a lot of ambient music, though at heart I'm more of a rock musician. Now, there have been plenty of rock-rap hybrid stuff over the past 10+ years. I am not really interested in doing that...so many have done it so well before me. Why join the popular club? But...what I am experimenting with is this odd ambient-rock...thing. I'm using some pretty heavy guitars, but I'm constructing the songs and arrangements with the dynamic peak/trough vibe of techno-ambient music. In the pre-production phase, I'm already finding that even from a work standpoint, it's neat to use the production elements of one style with the other. The guitars are heavy, but they are loop-based. The filtered synths follow a bit more traditional pattern that leans toward rock while maintaining the tension/release of techno. Anyway, this is all an experiement for now. It may indeed suck ass, or it may be cool. After I actually finish a song, perhaps I'll post it to show you what the hell I'm babbling about here. Should be in the next month or so. - Jeff Marketing Communications for MI/Pro Audio My solo music and stuff They Stole My Crayon
progfusion74 Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 I actually think that ambience/rock is a good mix and has been heard before in some form with people like Eno, Gabriel and Ayreon. You should definitely check out "You go now" by Chroma Key. Would love to hear your efforts. Maybe I will get some ideas/inspiration then prog http://www.indiegrooves.com/dnm/images/dnm_small.gif My Blog
Addix Metzatricity Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 That sounds pretty much like what I've been interested in doing. Except that I want to incorporate traiditional instruments (i.e. guitar/bass/drums) into an EBM/Synth-Pop type project. With todays modeling technology it's so easy (and incredibly fun) to make my bass sound like a synth-bass. I'm sure the same can be done for guitars and drums via triggers. I think it would make for a much more interesting show than 2 guys with keyboards bumpin' around to a drum machine. "Bass isn't just for breakfast anymore..." http://www.mp3.com/Addix_Metzatricity

Addix Metzatricity Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Golly that's reassuring... I forgot to mention that there WOULD be an actual keyboard player involved. Er... I just reread my post and I see how it may be misconstrued. I do not claim to be a keyboard player but I do have the deepest respect for them. That comment about the two guys and a drum machine was not directed towards keyboard players in general, just some of the shows I've seen in the genre I mentioned. I hope this prevents any misconceptions. "Bass isn't just for breakfast anymore..." http://www.mp3.com/Addix_Metzatricity
bearded yeti Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Actually my post was a little harsh. I just meant that from the guitar synths I've heard, they haven't succeeded in getting synth sounds. I've seen a band do what you are proposing live, and the audience just sat there confused. If you are able to pull it off though, I would definitely be interested in hearing it.
Addix Metzatricity Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 I know that bass synth technology is pretty well developed. As for guitar, I have yet to really look into it. Drums are drums... Triggering a synth drum patch, no biggie. Was this an established band? Or just local? "Bass isn't just for breakfast anymore..." http://www.mp3.com/Addix_Metzatricity
bearded yeti Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 I agree that getting synth bass sounds is a lot easier and practical than guitar synth. I play guitar as well as keys, and guitar synths just aren't worth the trouble, IMO. They're glitchy and difficult to control, and onboard sounds leave a lot to be desired. The band was local and I knew the bass player. They're very good musicians, just unable to connect with the audience wiith that project the way they had hoped.
Addix Metzatricity Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Ack, I feel bad taking this topic away from Jeff. Is any of their music online? I'm interested in hearing it. "Bass isn't just for breakfast anymore..." http://www.mp3.com/Addix_Metzatricity

Intheether Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 But...what I am experimenting with is this odd ambient-rock...thing ] Kind of like Tangerine Dream? I can think of a couple of current electro-bands that do the guitar/tech thang. I'm thinking like Red Snapper or Ruby. I don't think one can consciously create a new genre. Just let it flow! *

Jeff Klopmeyer Posted November 5, 2002 Author Posted November 5, 2002 Nope, not Tangerine Dream (harder/heavier). Not David Torn (less...uh...ambiguous and progressive). Not David Sylvian, either. And yes, I will indeed just let it flow. I just re-did my studio for the umpteenth time, and added another 256MB of RAM to my little Mac, so hopefully that will be condusive to actually getting some music done. - Jeff Marketing Communications for MI/Pro Audio My solo music and stuff They Stole My Crayon
