I have an idea (hybrid music)

So, over the years, I've been fortunate to have been exposed to a lot of different kinds of music. And, I've been open-minded enough to allow many different genres of music influence me as a composer.

At various stages, I've composed in completely different genres as a result of this influence. Rock, pop, classical, dance, jazz...I've tried a little bit of everything.

Recently, I've found myself listening to a lot of ambient music, though at heart I'm more of a rock musician. Now, there have been plenty of rock-rap hybrid stuff over the past 10+ years. I am not really interested in doing that...so many have done it so well before me. Why join the popular club? ;)

But...what I am experimenting with is this odd ambient-rock...thing. I'm using some pretty heavy guitars, but I'm constructing the songs and arrangements with the dynamic peak/trough vibe of techno-ambient music.

In the pre-production phase, I'm already finding that even from a work standpoint, it's neat to use the production elements of one style with the other. The guitars are heavy, but they are loop-based. The filtered synths follow a bit more traditional pattern that leans toward rock while maintaining the tension/release of techno.

Anyway, this is all an experiement for now. It may indeed suck ass, or it may be cool. After I actually finish a song, perhaps I'll post it to show you what the hell I'm babbling about here. Should be in the next month or so.

That sounds pretty much like what I've been interested in doing. Except that I want to incorporate traiditional instruments (i.e. guitar/bass/drums) into an EBM/Synth-Pop type project. With todays modeling technology it's so easy (and incredibly fun) to make my bass sound like a synth-bass. I'm sure the same can be done for guitars and drums via triggers. I think it would make for a much more interesting show than 2 guys with keyboards bumpin' around to a drum machine.

I think it would sound pretty lame.

Golly that's reassuring... I forgot to mention that there WOULD be an actual keyboard player involved.

Er... I just reread my post and I see how it may be misconstrued.

I do not claim to be a keyboard player but I do have the deepest respect for them. That comment about the two guys and a drum machine was not directed towards keyboard players in general, just some of the shows I've seen in the genre I mentioned. I hope this prevents any misconceptions.

Actually my post was a little harsh. I just meant that from the guitar synths I've heard, they haven't succeeded in getting synth sounds. I've seen a band do what you are proposing live, and the audience just sat there confused. If you are able to pull it off though, I would definitely be interested in hearing it.

I agree that getting synth bass sounds is a lot easier and practical than guitar synth. I play guitar as well as keys, and guitar synths just aren't worth the trouble, IMO. They're glitchy and difficult to control, and onboard sounds leave a lot to be desired.

The band was local and I knew the bass player. They're very good musicians, just unable to connect with the audience wiith that project the way they had hoped.

Don't worry about it...really, I'm not possessive about my threads that I start. ;)

My stuff will be on the heavier/darker side compared to Eno/Gabriel. It will NOT be Nine Inch Nails (though, all due respect to Trent). It will NOT be Portishead or Moby or William orbit. I'm having a hard time articulating what it will be, though.

As I said, as soon as I come up with something listenable, I'll let you hear what I'm unsuccessfully trying to convey with words.

Kind of like Tangerine Dream? I can think of a couple of current electro-bands that do the guitar/tech thang. I'm thinking like Red Snapper or Ruby.

I don't think one can consciously create a new genre. Just let it flow!

Almost brings to mind something David Torn might do :)

Maybe something like Gone To Earth by David Sylvian?

Nope, not Tangerine Dream (harder/heavier). Not David Torn (less...uh...ambiguous and progressive). Not David Sylvian, either.

And yes, I will indeed just let it flow. :)

I just re-did my studio for the umpteenth time, and added another 256MB of RAM to my little Mac, so hopefully that will be condusive to actually getting some music done.
