Dave Pierce Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Hi all, I've never played clav style much, but I'd like to try. Can you guys recommend some good recordings to listen to, to get a feel for the style? TIA. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. eric Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Dave, We had this topic a few months ago; you may want to do a search for it as there were quite a few funky clav songs mentioned at that time. One of my all time favorites is "Outta Space" by Billy Preston. You should also check out Clavinet.com for links and MP3s. Regards,Eric
Dave Pierce Posted November 5, 2002 Author Posted November 5, 2002 Cool, thanks guys! That should get me started. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. My Funk/Jam originals project: http://www.thefunkery.com/
Superbobus Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Lots of Herbie's '70s recordings have got the funkiest clav parts. There's one tune that starts as a shuffle but ends up in this speedy clavinet sixteenth funk. It's on Mr. Hands. Soulstars http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.
Pat Azzarello Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 I believe there is a really cool clav part on Pablo Cruise's "You're Out To Lose". Unfortunatly I only have it on vinyl, don't have a turntable, and it's not available for preview on Amazon... Pat http://www.patazzarello.com
steadyb Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Jeff Beck - "Wired" and "Blow by Blow" Great clav. (Max Middleton I believe).

ELP71 Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Don't forget 'Up On Cripple Creek' by The Band. Another good Emerson clav in addition to 'Nutrocker' is 'Tank' off the first album (not the orchestral off of 'Works'). Weasels ripped my flesh. Rzzzzzzz.
Dave Pierce Posted November 5, 2002 Author Posted November 5, 2002 Thanks again, guys. I should be pretty claved up with this stuff. TinderArts, nice avatar! --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. My Funk/Jam originals project: http://www.thefunkery.com/

Does anyone know what's become of Mr. Middleton?Looks like he was playing with Chris Rea through the 80s and 90s. link Stevie Wonder was also on Blow by Blow. I wonder who played what... Regardless, gotta love the song Constipated Duck!
Dave Bryce Posted November 6, 2002 Posted November 6, 2002 In addition to all the fine suggestions here, I kinda like the little clav part on the NoDoubt reggae song "Underneath It All". Very tasty. Another major nod as far as funky wah clav parts probably needs to go to Rufus' "Tell Me Something Good". dB ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <== Professional Affiliations: Royer Labs • Music Player Network

That will definitely go on the listen list, I love that song. Not only because it's a good song, but it also brings back memories of the zany group of guys I went to tech school with. When the instructor would tell us something good, one would sing in a high voice "Tell me something good", another would chime in a wah imitation "waaa waaa", and the third of these particular three stooges would (in a deep rumbling voice) say, "Tell me, tell me, tell me". OK, you had to be there. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. My Funk/Jam originals project: http://www.thefunkery.com/
Graham English Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Don't forget Sly and the Family Stone. Fresh is a great album By the way, my Clav D6 is my favorite instrument. It almost plays itself. ++ Graham English ++ Ear Training, Songwriting Tips, and Music Theory

He also wrote Thelonius.
MellowD Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 I like the Clav in Justin Timberlake's "(And She Said)Take Me Now". Scott Storch plays the Clav over some Timbaland beats. http://www.mtv.com/onair/spankinnewmusic/2002/first_listen/justin_timberlake/
Phil_Grove Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 .......And many reggae tracks (Bob Marley live at Lyceum is a stand out) use Clav. Think like a guitarist (apart from the drinking)
