This is all a matter of taste, but for me, I´ve narrowed it down to a handful. For that genuine analog feeling, the SE-1x is hard to beat - since it is analog. Depending on what you want to do, the fact that it´s monophonic may be a setback. The Korg MS 2000 is a really nice sounding machine with audio inputs, but it´s not real analog and it´s only got four voices. The Waldorf Q:s have really nice modulation possibilities and audio inputs, and there are many configurations available. The Novations are great synths, too, but I find both them and the Q:s a little "clumsy" for live applications - in the best sense of the word; I have an OB-Xa which is really rigid, but I love it anyhow(man, am I gonna get flamed now or what?!). For gigging, I prefer my Nord Lead 2. It doesn´t have all the possibilities of the others, such as audio inputs and advanced modulation matrixes, but it has a sound that sits really well in a mix and on a stage, which also happen to be occasions where I don´t need any built-in cheapo effects. It´s got bottom, but it doesn´t get "in the way", like some others do... I´d also take a look at the Nord Modular, which is probably the best for weird analogue stuff, since it´s basically a modular without patchcords getting in the way... The bottom line is that in today´s market there´s a synth for every taste, and the best thing to do is to first think about what you want to do with it, how much you can spend, and if the color matches the rest of your setup. ;) Then go listen to all of them. Check what synths your favorite artists use and why. Beware of boosted EQ:s both in synths and mixers  and don´t be afraid to e-mail the companies if you have any questions. Let your ears be the judge; don´t pay so much attention to smart-asses like me! :D;):D

Good luck!

Vote Two in this thread for Evolver. No synth is the be-all and end-all, but this instrument looks like absolutely incredible bang for the buck. Top-quality design _and_ implementation.
