sudeep Posted October 23, 2002 Posted October 23, 2002 Im trying this post again with a different heading because I got no replies last time. Hi Guys, Ive had an XP -80 for over a year now, which I play live with. This was my first synth and I havent really got into the sound tweaking aspects of it. Until now the band i was playing in was mainly using piano/rhodes/clav sounds so I havent needed to put much thought into the sounds. I have recently started playing in an R&B/soul/funk band where I am doing ALOT more horn/string parts. We are doing lots of Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the gang, jamiroquai etc My question is do you guys have any tips for creating these sounds. I am actually quite clueless about where to even start. A friend gave me a tip about creating a good brass sound, ie. layer a brass with an octave lower and slightly detune. SOunded great in my bedroom...but sucked live! Is there somewhere I can go to download xp 80 patches people have created? Or just get tips about how to create good sounds for live playing?
b3keys Posted October 23, 2002 Posted October 23, 2002 Highly recommend the Orchestral Exp Board (Vol 1) for strings. Brass is a bit harder. There are some nice brass patches on the Session board. Hope this is of some help.
marino Posted October 24, 2002 Posted October 24, 2002 I second the recommendation for the Session board. Nice brasses on there. Anyway, layering different brass samples does help - it differentiates the attacks and creates mass. Avoid layering one sample with itself. Another trick is to layer sampled brass with "analog" brass. To create analog-type brass, start with a sawtooth wave or two, filter quite open with a bit of resonance. Amp attack instantaneous, filter attack very fast, with fast decay and a rather high sustain value (if you have multiple segments, set a second decay to die out very slowly). Pitch attack very VERY fast, from a fourth below, the other osc (if you have it) from a fourth above. You could also experiment with using a highpass filter for one of the oscillators, and with using oscillator sync. It doesn't have to be perfect brass, it's only to give more beef to your samples when you layer the two sounds. Hope this helps Carlo
