Pim Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 I would like to suggest that we: - keep our avatars limited to a size of app. 100 x 100 pixels. (1.4 inch; 3,5 cm) - that animated avatars are not allowed - do not use pictures you would not show to your children and grandmother My Music I always wondered what happened after the fade out?
The T Dot Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 Hmmmmm.... Personally I think that some of the animated avatars add a nice touch to the forums. That dancing spiderman is one example. Chris

If you are having trouble you can disable the "Show Users Avatars" function in your preferences area. - do not use pictures you would not show to your children and grandmother Some of my relatives are porn stars... seriously. I think our moral codes would be very different on this count Pim. - DJDM DJDM.com
RABid Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I sort of agree with Pim. It is a shame that some cannot use a feature because others abuse it. Most of us are adults. We don't need pictures. We get to see the real thing...occasionally. And about those big avatars, what is it they say? Big avatar, small ... Robert This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
Steve LeBlanc Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I don't like the big avatars either but I haven't seen one yet that I wouldn't let my 3 year old Son see. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb

Addix Metzatricity Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I don't really understand the one about the animated avatars, but I definitely agree with curbing the urge to use risque avatars. Some of us check this at work, while others just don't appreciate it. Common courtesy... Please don't tell me it died along with common sense. Slow modem users do not like them, but I did not notice the function to switch avatars on/off. Thanks for the replies so far! My Music I always wondered what happened after the fade out?
soapbox Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 Animated GIFs distract me, so I've set my preferences to hide avatars. However, if I get curious and I want to see avatars, there is an easy way to reload the page with avatars showing: 1) In the address field of the current page, I highlight the URL after the "http://www.". In other words, I start with the "musicgearnetwork.com" part of the address and I highlight everything else to the right of it as well. 2) Then, I drag and drop that part of the address onto the page itself. 3) Afterwards, the page reloads with avatars showing and a message at the top that reads, "You are not logged in. Login or register." 4) Using the back button removes avatars and returns me to my logged in state. (I just discovered that avatars may also be revealed by removing the "www." part of the URL and hitting the "Return" key.) I hope that this helps. Best, Geoff Enthusiasm powers the world. Rick K. Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I'm one of those with an animated avatar. I'll change it immediately. I do agree that even marginally dirty ones shouldn't be allowed. Kids these days are way too smart and way too educated and see enough crap everywhere. Good call, Pim. Rick

What has a postcard sized avatar with a man stretching his penis to do with this? (or is the user of the avatar the guy on the picture? In that case I would like to suggest that he posts a smaller one ) My Music I always wondered what happened after the fade out?
BP3 Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 There was a halloween avatar topic over at CA's forum. Some people, myself included, forgot that an avatar change causes all posts on all forums to change for a particular member. Hopefully, no one objects to a pic of the voyager.
Tedster Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 This one is definitely not pornographic. And the file size isn't too bad either. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

But as per your request, I have changed my avatar to a smaller and less controversial picture.
Pim Posted October 17, 2002 Author Posted October 17, 2002 Okay, thanks guys. I made my point and you reacted in very good way! As far as I am concerned, we can close this thread. My Music I always wondered what happened after the fade out?
Bucktunes Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 Hope you don't mind one more (dumb) question; How do you adjust the dimensions? I know mine's a bit bigger than you asked for, but I really like it. I'd hate to have to scrap it. Peace all, Steve ><> Steve
Steve LeBlanc Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 Steve...I think the dimensions on that image are ok, but it is a GIF so the file size is a little large. You can't change the size of the image if it's hosted on someone else's server...it is what it is. But I don't mind resizing it and hosting it on my JamFree site for you...here: http://www.jamfree.com/keys32.jpg A little bit smaller in size...much smaller file size. Just Right Click, PROPERTIES, Select/Copy address and paste it in the Avatar URL field. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb

Synthguy Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 Now this was a nice little thread. Honestly, the way some musicians carry on, one would think they wanted to be hockey players. I'd best scurry back to my hole. This keyboard solo has obviously been tampered with!

Max Ventura Posted October 18, 2002 Posted October 18, 2002 I totally stand by Pim's opening post. I've said this also in Anderton's forum: -far too many avatars take a long time to load and take too much space on the page, whether they are animated or not. I do not need to have to turn that "don't show avatar" function on, because of some people. -I honestly don't recall any porn or disgusting avatars at the moment, but on the other hand i'm not online that often. I did see some really stupid ones, though. If I saw any porn or morally offending ones, I'd protest with the moderators immediately. And trust me, I couldn't care less about other people farther-away moral boundaries - my own ones are the limit. Max Ventura, Italy.
