Pat Azzarello Posted October 13, 2002 Posted October 13, 2002 I seem to remember seeing a bunch of pictures of Keith Emerson doing a soundcheck or playing in a parka. Though I never heard the full story, I seem to remember something about Montreal and a snowstorm, but I'm not sure. Anybody remember the full story behind this? [bTW - Played an outdoor gig last night as the temperature plunged to about 40 F... no wonder I was thinking about parkas] Pat http://www.patazzarello.com

Besides the cold, how was it? Aren't you going to be there tonight also? Kcbass "Let It Be!"

ELP were doing a sound check in an outdoor show in Montreal. They were all wearing winter coats and they looked like they were freezing! I remember that there where some very good detailed shots of Emerson playing his GX1 and Moog modular. Too bad I don't have the program anymore.

We'll have to get together again one of these days... Thanks, Pat Pat http://www.patazzarello.com
Krakit Posted October 14, 2002 Posted October 14, 2002 There's video of the sound check. They are playing Fanfare for the Common Man. Carl

But we definitely have to meet at Musicians Friends one of these days in the near future. Kcbass "Let It Be!"

Krakit Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 Someone in England made a bootleg for me in USA format (PAL?). It was originally aired on the BBC as a documentary. I've never seen a commercially produced version. Carl
synthetic Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I think the picture you're referring to is on page 119 of the "Vintage Synthesizers" book. Emerson playing Olympic Stadium in Montreal in what looks to be a B3 Bombers jacket with some snow on the ground. He's playing the GX-1 with a C-3 and Modular Moog opposite. Sorry I don't have a scanner, but if you don't have the book already there's another reason to add to the billion reasons to buy that book.

CarlPAL is the english system (PAL=Phase Alternated Line) The color (chromonance) signal is sent "balanced" by changing the phase 180 degrees on alternative lines. Plus its higher rez than the US system. The US system is NTSC. Stands for "Never Twice the Same Color" because any phase shifts cause color problems (like when a plane flies over, for example). (Actually, its something like National Television Standard Committee) The other system is SECAM. I believe its essentially the same as PAL.
ksoper Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 I've got the program from the Pirates tour. I think it had that picture in it. Ought to head to the attic to see if I can dig it out. Might be persuaded to scan a couple of pages. k.
billyb Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 I still have the "WORKS" tour program also and I'm sure that photo is in there. I also think it may be in the book that came in the box set. I need to check. There are no stupid questions but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots!

IIRC, Greg Lake was playing an Alembic 8 string bass.
joegerardi Posted October 18, 2002 Posted October 18, 2002 There are a myriad of pictures from this tour. It was at Montreal Olympic Stadium, where ELP were rehearsing for the "Works" tour. The center pages of the Tour programme show ELP posing for a picture in knee-deep snow, Emo's picture in the booklet show him playing the GX1 in the snow, and Greg Lake is indeed playing an 8-string Alembic. They spent about 6 months in Montreal and opened the tour there, to a (still) record-setting crowd. There was also a promotional video of "Fanfare" that was during a snowstorm. How he got his cold fingers to move that fast is beyond me! Oh, Synthetic: Good eye: That was indeed a B3 bomber jacket. It was worn by the gunners in bombers with a matching pair of overalls to protect them from being frozen in an open-waisted bomber in World War II. ..Joe Setup: Korg Kronos 61, Roland XV-88, Korg Triton-Rack, Motif-Rack, Korg N1r, Alesis QSR, Roland M-GS64 Yamaha KX-88, KX76, Roland Super-JX, E-Mu Longboard 61, Kawai K1II, Kawai K4.
billyb Posted October 18, 2002 Posted October 18, 2002 Just thought of another place where you will find a "snow" picture. The Christmas CD released a few years back has one of these pictures on the cover. If I remember correctly they aren't playing any instruments. There are no stupid questions but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots!
