Infusion Posted October 11, 2002 Posted October 11, 2002 Do you use preamps or are there other tricks to fatten up the sounds.
Superbobus Posted October 12, 2002 Posted October 12, 2002 Line6 POD preamp simulation and effects used with my Rhodes. For fattening the clean sound and for chorus, phaser, delay, tremolo, distortion and a cheezy Leslie effect. http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.

Layer the Yamaha 'Rotary Organ' w/ the 'Cheeze Organ' and get a great fake Hammond. Is cheeze responsible for the sizzle I hear on organs in recordings? Kcbass "Let It Be!"
S_Gould Posted October 12, 2002 Posted October 12, 2002 I mostly run my synths through pre-amps (Vipre, VMP-2, Flamingo); though I sometimes run 'em through an amp and mic it up. Either method sounds better than going direct - IMNSHO. Scott
Gulliver Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 Topic: Do you use preamps to "fatten" when recording? Now for fattening up some of my (bass or other crucial) parts I record them through the FatMan (Fat1 by TLA audio) stereo valve compressor . I am back.
Krakit Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I record my electric keyboards direct. The signal is hot enough to do so, so I do. I can always tweak, add or otherwise muddy up the water AFTER I shred on the natch. Better than commiting on the fly. Carl
sbrock1san.rr.com Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I use preamps to get a "hotter" signal into my recorder but they don't really fatten things. If I want a fat sound I layer two synths with MIDI.
UA Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 If want to warm up the sonds, then try a D.I. like Manley, Avalon, Little Labs. http://www.mercenary.com/micpres1.html
RABid Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 My Nord Modular is the only thing I have that seems to need fattening. For it I use a Line 6 Pod. Most everything ends up on computer and the programs like Vintage Warmer keep getting better. Having said that I am looking hard at something like the dbx 386 Microphone Preamp which has tubes for warming and a converts to digital signal. Robert This post edited for speling. clusterchord Posted April 25, 2004 Posted April 25, 2004 i bumped this vintage thread, cause i thought it's always interesting to hear what people use for recording all these synths.. any new experiences or equipment revelations on this front? i'm pondering over a high-end 2ch or 4ch solution for this; Great River MP2-NV, Vintech 473, API 3124 or even two TD-1 by Millenia. I'd like to be able to smooth out or add balls to all rompler and digital stuff (like DX or Waldorf) and to my rhodes. otoh, it would be great to bring things like A6 to the A/D as transparently as possible.. Any thoughts? http://www.babic.com - music for film/theatre, audio-post

KenElevenShadows Posted April 25, 2004 Posted April 25, 2004 I occasionally run my digital keyboards through the line inputs of the Peavey VMP-2 tube mic preamp, using a little bit of the EQ if necessary. Seems to help a little.
