Maxwell McGee Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 Can anyone recommend a decent starter keyboard for me. It's been a while..
bearded yeti Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 What are you looking to spend? What functionality/sounds do you need?
Maxwell McGee Posted October 10, 2002 Author Posted October 10, 2002 Oh, about $1000 or so. Nothing specific in mind - just want to start playing around with music again
Rick K. Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 Welcome to the Forum, Max! Hope you have fun here. Check out Musicians Friend or Zzounds and see what appeals to you. If you're seeking used, check out Ebay . I've found some great deals recently on used gear. Don't be afraid to ask specific questions on this forum. You'll probably get more advice than you'd like! Most important, try to play the board before you buy it. Every one of us here has our own preferences for whatever reason, which have been accumulated from hands-on experience. G'luck and have fun! We commonly refer to your situation as having G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Enjoy! Rick
bearded yeti Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 The toughest problem for a newbie is that there are simply too many boards available. Research them, and try to figure out what you would like. I agree that checking out Ebay would be a good bet, and for a general purpose board you'll probably want a Korg, Yamaha, or Roland ROMpler. If you need 88 weighted keys, this will add to the cost. If 61 keys is enough, It will probably a good choice in terms of price and portability.
Dave Pierce Posted October 11, 2002 Posted October 11, 2002 For used gear, I've had fabulous luck with craigslist. www.craigslist.org. craigslist started in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is where I live, but it has expanded to other cities as well. I don't know if it's any good in those other cities, but it's great if you're in the Bay Area. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. RABid Posted October 11, 2002 Posted October 11, 2002 If you want a keyboard that you can use to learn and play, and you want to be comfortable with sitting at a real piano then I would suggest something like a Yamaha P-80 or Roland FP9. They have 88 keys and feel more like a real piano. If you don't want a weighted keyboard then look at the E-Mu PK6. It has 61 keys that feels like an organ and is a great value. There are other choices but these are a good starting point as to measure other keyboards. You definitely want to try more than one and get a keyboard that fits your taste. Mark Zeger Posted October 11, 2002 Posted October 11, 2002 You might still be able to find a new, though discontinued, Alesis QS8.1. When Alesis came out with the QS8.2, the 8.1 closeout price was $999. It's better than just a "starter" keyboard. It has an 88 note weighted keyboard and a wealth of good sounds.
