Mac/PC Questions

Hello everyone, it's been a while...

I have some serious questions here regarding PC/Mac stuff. I presently have both a mac and a pc computer. I presently use my pc for most music stuff, simply because I already have the software built up over time. Finale, cakewalk, cooledit 2000, etc... Of course I can use protools free on either system. But, here is the question: What does the mac offer me music wise, that the pc doesn't? I know dp3, and now logic, are only available on the mac. But, sonar and gigastudio are only available on the PC too. I've kind of planned to use both computers together... Is that the answer? I don't mean to start a pc/mac war here, but, I need to know more about the mac's strengths (besides protools, that's rather obvious). Truthfully, I've never really liked cakewalk. In fact, I hate it. I've never been particularly productive with it. There's always sonar, but why would I upgrade a program I don't even like to begin with?

I am aware of using a MOTU interface with say dp3 for example, for better midi timing and etc. I'm leaning towards audio presently however, and I don't see myself needing 128 channels of midi. I'm not doing orchestrations...

What am I doing with a mac? Haven't I researched this enough already?

Well, I bought a (used) mac to be familiar with it as we have a lot of them at work. Systems I am responsible for. What better way to know one than to own one and use one? I figured I could use it for some music stuff too at the very least. Which brings me to another question:

I am presently running OSX, although I'm going to install 9.2.2 soon along with X, because as most of you know, there's not a lot of X software out there yet for audio/midi. I do have some 9.x software (like the new Karma MW software) so I know I need to use both environments for now. But here's the question: What are you mac guys and gals running? Are you running a 9.x/X hybrid setup? Have you completely switched to OSX? Have you decided to stick with 9.x for now?

Your serious replies are appreciated...

Mac with Logic 4.8 and Sibelius 1.2 running under OS9.2.2

Office and internet stuff I'm running under OS X on another partition (with a third partition for OS9.2.2 only used for "classic".

I don't need a lot of software, just a system that never lets me down.

Maybe it's as simple as I use a PC at my day job, so I associate PC's with bland programs like MS office. I use my Mac for graphic design (photoshop, bryce etc...) mostly music (DP, pluggo, etc...) and general fun stuff, like G-Force (an amazing freeware prog that takes your audio and translates it into the most spectacular visuals on the planet). I can customize ext. sets on my mac to optimize any and all of these programs too. It does crash less, but I hate to say it freezes a bit more as I tend to realy push my audio capabilities. Macs are way easier than PC's to upgrade with soundcards, video cards, RAM cards etc. (towers only) and I prefer the OS (9.2.2, still not a X convert) to the Windows NT I use at work.

But with all that said, I have many friends who happily use their PC's for audio. Most I know use CEP, Sonar or Cakewalk.

It's why they make chocolate and vanilla, you know? If $ was no object to me, I'd invest in a PC laptop just for ACID and giga. The more the merrier

;)
