eric Posted September 26, 2002 Posted September 26, 2002 I received the new issue of Keyboard magazine today and there was an ad for the Yamaha S-90 with this URL: SNinety.com Not that much new content, but it looks pretty cool and I look forward to trying out this keyboard. Regards, Eric
eric Posted December 22, 2002 Author Posted December 22, 2002 So who is using this jank nowadays? I played one kinda briefly and it sounded killer. But I had a bit of a hard time getting around all those tiny buttons. Did not seem to be the best user interface and a lot of hardware switches to potentially go bad. Regards, Eric

This is totally consistent with Yamaha tradition. Yes - its pretty much the standard Yamaha interface. One nice feature os that you can use the sliders to tweek a lot of aspects of the piano sound. When I first played one I was a little disappointed but last time I looked at one I found this tweekability and adjusted it to taste (adjusting the attack and the eq mostly - added perhaps 6db in the mid range) and was totally whelmed. Hey Chris - is that cat on Valium? No way my cat would sit there like that. (Although using the possesive for my cat is dubious in itself)
Superbobus Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 Did not seem to be the best user interface and a lot of hardware switches to potentially go bad. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I agree on the Yamaha UI thing. I'm used to it now but it took me at least a year, goddammit! However, I don't agree about the hardware switches. The only Japanese manufacturer that gave me problems with hardware was Korg, but they have that easy UI... Soulstars http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.
daBowsa Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 I've not played an S90 yet, how different is it from the S80? I'm sure if I was going to get a board for the EP's, it's be a used S80. But what would I be missing from the S90? Still, if I'm going to pay $1800 for a keyboard for the EP's, it'd probably be an Electro2. I'd like to think I could find an S80 for under a grand.
pete psingpy Posted December 24, 2002 Posted December 24, 2002 I own an S80 and I played an S90 today. Definitely I like the S90 acoustic pianos a lot better. And, the action seems a lot better as well; I liked it better than even the P80 that was in the store. So they seem to have fixed 2 things I didn't like about the S80 (bouncy, springy action and the piano sounds). The other sounds were good, but it's hard to compare apples to apples since I was plugged into a different amp, different room acoustics, etc. I'm curious if they have improved the organs. They sounded pretty good, but I honestly could not tell if they were significantly better. It took me a year to learn my way around the S80. The S90 interface was different and seemed confusing as usual, but just fooling in the store it's hard to really know. I do want an S90, sigh...I really can't afford it and can't justify the cost to get one.
ed hamilton Posted December 24, 2002 Posted December 24, 2002 I have had an S90 since week 1. I sold my Motif - missed it so much - but did not need the sampler or the sequencer from hell - so I went with the S90. The new piano patches based on the new piano rom waves have some issues but all in all I think this is the best yamaha board in some time. (maybe ever) For the money its killer. Its light for an 88 note board and the action is great. Feel free to ask me any specific questions about it. Its become my main board lately. Also the new S90 piano is good enough that i am seldom booting giga for all the piano libs that i have. Not that its perfect but you turn the thing on... its sounds great..... no boot time..... no loading..... dig. ed
area51recording Posted December 24, 2002 Posted December 24, 2002 Hi Ed. Just curious- I got my S90 this past Fri. and would like to set it up for live gigging using splits and layers but I'm having a bit of trouble- I can get the sounds to come up in Performance mode just fine, but I'd also like to route some of the sounds out to the assignable outputs- mostly the organ sounds so I can run them thru my hughes and kettner rotosphere- but other than mentioning their existance I can't find anything in the manual that tells how to route sounds to them. Also I've got the Piano Plugin card installed and the sounds play fine in voice mode but sound very strange when I try to use them in performance mode- They've got a ton of FX on them and the sustain pedal doesn't seem to work. (It works fine in voice mode)I really only want to set up a couple of split and layer presets- piano+strings, piano+organ, that type of stuff- and I've been thru that section of the manual about 25 times today and can't quite suss it out. If you or maybe any other S90's out there could help me out it would be greatly appreciated! tia Bob Green Area 51 Recording Studio
