Jack son Posted September 23, 2002 Posted September 23, 2002 I am trying to decide on an 88 weighted. I am looking at the Motif 8 and the Triton Studio 88. I am also looking at the new S90, which I would have to pair up with a 61 key synth, such as the 2 mentioned above in 61 key configuration. I have a Ketron SD1 (anyone heard of this?) This is strictly for use in a small project studio. Any suggestions? Any articles I could check out? I am a little tight on time as I am selling the Ketron to purchase the other(s). Thanks Jack(son)

ThanksAs long as you're in that price range, don't forget the Kurzweil workstation. It's definitely worth a listen.
Superbobus Posted September 24, 2002 Posted September 24, 2002 IMO: Triton studio Pros: - dead easy sequencer - all in one unit, handy dandy - nice synth type stuff Cons: - pianos are weak - all in one unit, one thing fucks up and your triton studio needs service - stiff action Motif 8 Pros: - great pianos and EPs (Rhodes!) - good over all synth stuff - better key action Cons: - Yamaha style, read: difficult OS - screen is too small My 0,02 cents. http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.
Jack son Posted September 24, 2002 Author Posted September 24, 2002 Thanks, this is VERY HElpful!!! Jack(son)
Jeff Popplewell Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 Yep. Superbobus pretty much nailed it. I've had Motif 8 for 5 months, still have lots to learn. If you can handle frustration and a manual written by cretins, you will learn to love the board. Great feeling keyboard and great sounds. Just be prepared for it to take time. The DVD manual was a godsend and so is http://www.motifator.com/ where hundreds of Mo'Bros hang out and provide answers in a day. Good luck! Jeff, Cincinnati
RABid Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 An S90 paired with a Trition Studio 61 would give you the best of both. Robert This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
Jack son Posted September 25, 2002 Author Posted September 25, 2002 I tend to agree, but the 61 is about $2500 and the S90 is $2000. The Motif 8 is about $2000. What do the plug in board run ($$)? j Jack(son)
bearded yeti Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 Whatever you do, don't get the S90 with a Motif. It would be a complete waste since they have the same engines and most of the same sounds. Regarding the price of the Triton Studio, why don't you go for the Triton Classic instead? The Studio doesn't really offer enough improvement over the original to justify such a big price difference. I have the original Triton and trust me, you won't be dissapointed. I would go for the S90 with A 61 Key Triton Classic. DM
Jack son Posted September 25, 2002 Author Posted September 25, 2002 what's the classic go for? Jack(son)
The T Dot Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 from zzounds.com: 61 key Korg Triton (Classic) $1995.00 61 key Korg Triton Studio $2699.95
Jack son Posted September 25, 2002 Author Posted September 25, 2002 great, thanks. I'll give this consideration. Jack(son)
RABid Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 The biggest difference between the triton classis and the triton studio is polyphony. The triton studio essentially has two both a Triton and a Triton Rack inside. It is also more expandable than the Triton classic, comes with the new 16 meg piano, and I think has more memory for the sequencer. The way the polyphony is managed is a bit off, but it is still a great value and very nice if you are trying to full productions. Robert This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
Jack son Posted September 25, 2002 Author Posted September 25, 2002 ...but would having the Motif 8 and the classic make up for that difference? Jack(son)
Felix_dup1 Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 Jack(son), you still haven't said what you'll be using them for. Does the application call for more polyphony (i.e. lots of sequencing), are you looking for more extensive recording and sampling capabilities, or what? Depending on your needs, you may be better off with a MOTIF8 and a Triton Rack, or an S90 and a Yamaha AW16G, or any other number of options. It's not about price, it's about your needs and what will address those needs best (and most economically).
Jack son Posted September 25, 2002 Author Posted September 25, 2002 I saw the rack last night in a mAg. How does that work? I don't expect you to write a lot, just a little of how it would work with the Motif 8. I appreciate your help! Jack(son)
Felix_dup1 Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 The Triton Rack is essentially a Triton without the keys. You would connect it to the MOTIF8 with a MIDI cable, then you could play Triton sounds with the MOTIF. The other cool thing about the Triton Rack is that you can add up to 8 expansion boards. Triton Rack is always a good option to consider for adding Triton sounds to your rig.
Jack son Posted September 25, 2002 Author Posted September 25, 2002 Does this give me the styles that I will lose when I sell my Ketron KD1? Can these styles be saved and used on the Motif or Triton? Thant's al for today. Thanks again!! Jack(son)
The T Dot Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 The Triton and Motif are not arranger keyboards like the Ketron. They don't have any styles nor can they use any. Chris
Jack son Posted September 25, 2002 Author Posted September 25, 2002 The n since I am not playing live, just studio (small project) work, the Ketron isn't a loss? Jack(son)
Dan O Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 Jack , Many people do not know what the SD1 is or sounds like . All the drum loops on the Sd1 have multiple variations , intro's , endings and fill in's . You will not find any of that with a triton or motif . The 6 gig hard drive allows you to record directly onto the hard drive . You can edit every sequence you ever make ( change sounds, panning, effects , transpose ) directly on the hard drive . You see on a triton or motif you would have to transfer a recorded song into the sequencer to edit . dano/ sd1 demonstrator . www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO
Jack son Posted September 25, 2002 Author Posted September 25, 2002 OK now I understand. Since I have 2480 I could record then resequence?? Jack(son)
