Dan O Posted September 5, 2002 Posted September 5, 2002 Well ...my wife and daughter are watching American Idol tonight . Anyone seen it ? Comments ? This final show is milking it for all it's worth . Oh ...and how about the winner from the UK ? Good ........................Bad ? www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO
BP3 Posted September 5, 2002 Posted September 5, 2002 UK guy is horrible. The mixer couldn't get rid of the comb-filtering problem on the vocal mics. America actually voted correctly. Kelly should have a good future (if she didn't get one of those Toni Braxton contracts).

It seemed they could never get Justin's vocal right. Just when I decide he has a voice that soundmen run from, they get a good sound on him. About the Kelly/Tony Braxton thing, this could be a contest you want to come 2nd. Kelly is probably stuck with the contract the show gives just by signing the show's entry form. Where as Justin should have a number of recording offers to choose from. Yeah the public got it right, but you wonder what they were doing when they kept Nicky & that other chick who can't sing, instead of keeping RJ or AJ or what ever some of the boy band wannabes names are or the 2 black girls. Maybe it's the trend - boy band singers with good pitch are out & aggressive rock chicks that are good friends with AutoTune are in. Steve www.seagullphotodesign.com
RABid Posted September 5, 2002 Posted September 5, 2002 I have followed it thoughout the season and posted a bit on the SSS thread. I thing the best guy in the final ten was the first to be voted off. He did pretty well last night. Nikki was the worst of the female singers but managed to hang on longer than Tamyra. From what I understand the production company has an option on the contracts of any of the final 10 so I am not sure how lucky Tamyra was by not winning. At least she does not have to release those two horrible songs. Robert This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
nitecrawler47 Posted September 5, 2002 Posted September 5, 2002 Sounds like I should be glad I didn't waste my time watching the program. Now Andre's tennis match was good entertainment! nitecrawler "Time to head down that old Colorado highway pardner."
Dan O Posted September 5, 2002 Author Posted September 5, 2002 Yes .....I was watching the Agassi tennis match as well . Did you see the height difference between those 2 ? Great tennis ! Did you know that a human can not lick their own elbow ? dano www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO

Dan O Posted February 12, 2003 Author Posted February 12, 2003 We are getting down to the final 10 as of last night 02/11/03 . My favorite is Rueben . He really has a great voice ! A star in the making ! Some of the finalist have been poor and someone needs to tell Simon to stop wearing V necks . Has anyone else been watching ? Dano www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO
Felix_dup1 Posted February 12, 2003 Posted February 12, 2003 I watch this show every week. Still waiting for it to get down to the final 10 so the few really talented people rise to the top. Last night's show was great, because it proved that it's not all about image over substance, because Ruben really gave the stand-out performance of the night, and for those of you who don't know, he's a really big black guy who was wearing a football jersey last night. Up against 5 good-looking girls, a pretty boy, and a geeky nice guy - it'll be cool to see Ruben voted through tonight (which is what should happen). Also, for anyone following the show, I heard something briefly on the radio this morning that Frenchie (sp?), the big-personality girl with an even bigger voice, has pulled out of the show due to some connections with an adult website. Anyone know any more details? I was looking forward to her going far in the competition.
RABid Posted February 12, 2003 Posted February 12, 2003 I have been watching. I did not care that much for Rueben. I kept wishing he would just hold a note for a while and stop trying to make every word a run. Kimberly Locke, the girl that followed him was good but she may have blown it by telling Simon he sucked. She just got too belligerent. Even at the end of the show. I did like the girl that they said was too Broadway. She had a nice, deep voice and good control. It also seems like the contestants are having a hard time connecting with the piano. Almost as if they cannot hear it very well on stage. The pianist also seems to rush things a bit. Maybe he is trying to fit into time constraints. I was looking forward to hearing Frenchie Davis. It seems that she has now been disqualified. Something about appearing on a pornographic web site in the past. Robert Edit - Here is some information on Frenchie The Smoking Gun - Frenchie Davis This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
meccajay Posted February 12, 2003 Posted February 12, 2003 Here's some news....bad news for all of us who managed to enjoy her talent! 'Idol' contestant booted for working for adult Web site By Gary Levin, USA TODAY Frenchie Davis will be replaced on a show airing Feb. 25. Frenchie Davis, the full-figured brassy-voiced American Idol semifinalist from Washington, D.C., has been eliminated from Fox's talent competition after she acknowledged she worked for an adult Web site four years ago. Fox said she'll be replaced on a show airing Feb. 25. But co-producer 19 Entertainment, which signs Idol winners to recording contracts, says it will "endeavor to do all in its power to help Frenchie further her music career." Another Idol finalist, Jaered Andrews, was replaced earlier for undisclosed reasons. TROLL . . . ish.
Dan O Posted February 12, 2003 Author Posted February 12, 2003 In regards to Frenchie .......... I've heard of opening yourself up for critism , but that is rediculous . I liked her singing ! dano www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO
Mark Zeger Posted February 12, 2003 Posted February 12, 2003 Getting kicked out of a shallow, media concocted competition for participating in adult entertainment seemed to work out nicely for Vanessa Williams.
meccajay Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 The whole Frenchie thing sounds like a scam to me, If I recall, didn't last year's Nikki Mikibin admit to working at a strip club at some point? Oh well, I guess everyone has a point about us hearing some great dance remixes featuring Frenchie a LOT sooner huh?! TROLL . . . ish.
Superbobus Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 This sounds like the Dutch "Idols". And about that program I can tell you... I HATE IT!!! It's like a Soundmix Show on steroids and above all that, there are much bigger talents walking around in our own backyards and nobody sees them. I can only hope the American version is much better and not so overhyped. About Frenchie? What a hypocrite thing! I mean, how many movie stars started out playing roles in porn movies? So much for this little rant. Soulstars http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.
RABid Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 It could not be any worse than those pictures they showed of Simon last night. Bleh. Robert This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page

What i really hate is that it's all about the looks. Why??? Rudy
Felix_dup1 Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 Ohtar, you haven't been watching. Take a look at the contestants who have made it through on the last two weeks, and clearly, it's not about the looks.

If you're referring to Pam Anderson and the likes, she doesn't exactly scream MOVIE STAR... By the way, did anyone hear about Kelly Clarkson? I heard on a radio show that there was a scandal involving her. Apparantly, she had a recording contract before she went on American Idol...anyone have any details?
Steve LeBlanc Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 All of these singer suck IMO. I think the fact that no real musicians even take part in these contests tells a lot. But I don't really watch much of the show so I might have missed something good...my wife watches it every week. I guess it's fun to watch if you keep up with what's going on...kinda like the Bachelor. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb

Well Stephen that certainly would be true of last year, but this year there are 4-5 burners in the competition for sure. If you want an idea, the girl Frenchie sounds a lot like a Martha Walsh who did "Every Body Dance Now" and the Black Box stuff in the 80's... there was a guy last night named Ruben who is like a young Luther Vandross. Talent vs Looks is what Simon dubbed this years compitition. TROLL . . . ish.

But here in holland was a contestant who was a little bit overweighted but had a great (soul) voice. but she was voted off!!1 Rudy

Some singers are real musicians some aren't. None of the singers I've seen on this show are musicians. My wife told me there was this heavy set black girl who could not only sing but was musical, I didn't see her but I trust my wife. catch my drift brah? http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
Superbobus Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 I'm sorry, but last time I checked, there are virtually NO movie stars with careers starting in Porn. If you're referring to Pam Anderson and the likes, she doesn't exactly scream MOVIE STAR... But did she get kicked out of Baywatch? I don't think so. And I'm not talking hard stuff only. Look at how many sites show pics of Selma Hayek, Catherina Zeta Jones a.m.o. BTW, Sylvester Stallone started out in porn but he definitely doesn't scream MOVIE STAR. I don't know what the heck he's screaming... Ohtar, you're right. They asked somebody in the first audition: "Do you really think people would hang a poster of your face above their beds?" Soulstars http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.
Erlic Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 I've been watching the series, merely because I caught the last four episodes last year, and wanted to see exactly how they got involved with the auditions, etc. In the first group, I thought Kimberle should have gotten it instead of Julia. Didn't care that much for her. In the second group, I liked Ruben, but would have preferred Hadas, even though she didn't sound that great. I think she could have done a hell of a lot better. How many times do you want to hear Somewhere Over the Rainbow? She did it for the audition, and should have picked something else to show her abilities, not as a vocalist, but about the different types of music available, and how she can sing them. But then again, the judges aren't doing anything other than critiquing them. Simon, as belittling as he might sound, I believe is using some reverse psychology. You tell someone they're bad, and one of two things will happen. A, they'll simply give up, or B, they'll try to prove a point and stick it down Simon's mouth, which could prove beneficial for the contestant. Also it's a shtick for promo. You have to have a Simon type of person simply for the ratings, because that's what it's all about. It will be interesting to see who makes it in the finals, and just how good, and diversifies they are. _____________ Erlic
Felix_dup1 Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 I get what you're saying, Stephen. I bet when it comes down to the final 10, there will be a few musicians who are really great singers and performers. It's kinda cool to watch the process and how those few ultimately stand out way above the rest by that point.

Soulstars where did you hear that sly started in porn? He was homeless when he wrote his first movie, Rocky, and was a huge success there after, so...? As for the ladies, I think there's a huge difference between a movie star posing nude and a porn queen making it big in hollywood. Would you classify Marilyn as a pornstar? Baywatch was popular cause of the women, without doubt; yet, to claim that any of the actresses were movie stars... I guess it all comes down to symantics
Dave The Rave Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 I could not care less about the past history of any of the contestants. What matters to me is "can they sing well?" and "do they have that je ne sais quoi that makes a star?" IMO, Ruben has both, in gollops, so did Frenchie. I'm an avid follower of this program. I love it! I have to say though, that I'm really not sure why everyone hates Simon Cowell. I have to disclose that I am a fellow Brit, but I find myself agreeing with EVERYTHING he says. He's right on the money every time. I guess the show would be fairly bland without them playing up his "cruel" comments and having a dig at him. Leave the poor bloke alone, I say! Looking forward to next week....wow, we have the "Bachelorette" final 2 hour spectacular AND the final "Joe Millionaire" show, with a big twist promised in the end (I say it's that Zora is actually a millionairess in her own right) AND another semi-final round of "American Idol"! I'm hooked on this "contest/selection" TV stuff, can you tell? Also, I'm hooked on 24 and CSI, both in glorious HDTV - anyone else? Cheers, DTR Cambrian Guitars
