Mark Zeger Posted September 3, 2002 Posted September 3, 2002 Saw them last Friday. I'd forgotten how much I liked them. Founding member Rick Davies sounds great. Roger Hodgson's parts are covered by Mark Hart, who backed Crowded House on keyboards. They opened with "School", and peppered the set with all your favorites: "Take the Long Way Home", "Give a Little Bit", "The Logical Song", "Bloody Well Right", etc. And for gear junkies, near center stage: a showroom-new Wurlizter electric piano. After all, what's a Supertramp song without a genuine Wurly? One downside: the venue allowed smoking. To make things worse, saxman John Helliwell encouraged it from the stage at the start of show. Even though the venue is an "outdoor shell", when everyone around you is smoking there's no relief. After we complained to security, we were moved 10 rows up to an area where the air was clearer.
Rod S Posted September 3, 2002 Posted September 3, 2002 I've always liked Supertramp, inspite of Roger's voice. I did get a chance to see them live around 89, I think, already with different vocals - and I found I enjoyed the songs a lot more. Excellent concert. It's funny - I have a STYX live album from last year, that I enjoy a lot more than the recordings with the original singer (Dennis DeYoung?)- I think it's the guitar player now doing the vocals, Tommy Shaw, maybe. Ditto on Journey - I have two live recordings, one with Steve Perry on vocals and one with Steve Augeiri (the new guy) - I like the new Steve's voice a lot better, it's not as high pitched and sound smoother. I wonder when Rush is going to get a new singer Korg Kronos X73 / ARP Odyssey / Motif ES Rack / Roland D-05 / JP-08 / SE-05 / Jupiter Xm / Novation Mininova / NL2X / Waldorf Pulse II MBP-LOGIC American Deluxe P-Bass, Yamaha RBX760
Dan O Posted September 3, 2002 Posted September 3, 2002 I think RUSH is considering Diamond David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar . David has been taking steriods to adjust his voice for "closer to the heart" . dano www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO

That early stuff is just stunning. Last September (pre-11) I was in Flagstaff, Arizona for a week. Flagstaff is a somewhat remote, mountainous town, which is also a college town. There was a bar there that had a sign out for a Rush tribute band, so of course my wife and I went to check them out. The singer just nailed that Geddy Lee voice. Course, he had a different guy playing bass. It was fun to watch though. I'm not sure what those college kids thought of this late-thirties yuppy-looking dude. The band played their set in chronological order, and for the first couple hours I recognized each song on the first note, and knew all the words. Then, I suddenly became clueless. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. My Funk/Jam originals project: http://www.thefunkery.com/
bondsong Posted September 3, 2002 Posted September 3, 2002 I thought Larry Gowan had joined Styxx. If so I'm sure he could cover any of those vocal parts....... not that I care. Frank
