Steve LeBlanc Posted September 2, 2002 Posted September 2, 2002 I had fun...I probably shouldn't have tried to play guitar last night ...man I suck at that and seem to be getting worse. Dave jammed despite my incompetence...I hope it was fun for Dave. It was great to see SteadyB again, all ways cool to hang with. Met Jeff Leites and his wife, the club was noisy and full so there wasn't much opportunity to socialize but they seemed to enjoy the experience. I ended up staying at the club long after the MP.com contingent left...until closing time...then we relocated to Freedom Studio and jammed until about 3:30AM...woohoo...crazy man. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
Dave Bryce Posted September 2, 2002 Posted September 2, 2002 I had fun, too. I enjoyed hanging with Steve, Steadyb, and Paul B, and it was good to see Jeff L. (albeit briefly). Sadly, I had to leave before midnight. The jam, while interesting, wasn't exactly what I had in mind. There was a house band showing off their stuff (covers and originals), and some other people got up and did specific tunes. While Steve, his brother, Paul and I did get to get up and play, we were up there for about five minutes - we only got to do one tune. I'm looking for jamming...y'know, pick a key, find a groove, and let it grow and go where it takes you. Maybe that's what it turned into after midnight, but it certainly wasn't how it started... dB ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <== Professional Affiliations: Royer Labs • Music Player Network
Steve LeBlanc Posted September 2, 2002 Posted September 2, 2002 DAMN...I almost forgot about Paul...Paul and I hung out for quite a while after SteadyB and Dave left...very good to see you again Paul. After midnight things did loosen up a lot...the house band didn't play anymore and people were doing some freeform stuff...Paul got up and played more Percussion...I played some keys (I was drunk enough at that point to tolerate the Korg sounds ), I sang some more stuff, then I played drums for a blues jam. Last week I was miserable and pondered never going back...this week I had a lot of fun...next week I may or may not go...may or may not enjoy the experience...who knows? I'm going to be starting my own jam night soon...it will be very different...more freejam oriented and only invited players will play...no sign-up sheet. I think there's positives to both approaches (sign-up/invite only)...I would never be playing music with more than half of the people that show up to Universal Bar and Grill if it weren't for the free for all nature of it. Sorry if you were disappointed at all...I did tell you not to expect too much http://www.youtube.com/notesleb

I find a lot about jamming is about expectations. If you go without any, I'm often pleasantly surprised & enjoy it. The next time I go I now expect something. It may not live up to my expectation. I like both jamming standards & free-form. I like jamming songs I've never played before, but free-form is interesting. Sometimes it's great, getting a groove, starting a riff, as long as it's half organized. Nothing worse than comping along for 5 or 6 minutes listening to some guitarplayer who won't lend the floor to someone else. Steve www.seagullphotodesign.com
