Mike Martin Posted August 19, 2002 Posted August 19, 2002 Tascam Jeff's thread prompted me to start another. For a long while I've been listening to the same old stuff. I recently got two new CD's that I really can't stop listening to. The first is from a guy named Taylor Mesple. He gave me CD after I programmed some sounds for him on my last trip out to Denver. Truthfully I get alot CDs from customers, that I listen to...maybe once (except for CDs given to me by members of this list like Laurie Z). This one I haven't been able to stop listening too. This guy has some serious talent and there are some very serious players on this disk. The CD is called Victory Land and you can check it out at http://www.taylormesple.com My other recent surprise was the new Bruce Hornsby CD, Big Swing Face. One of the reasons its surprising is that he hardly plays any piano on this disk. Lots of Wurly, lots of distortion and lots of synths. Its a completely different sound, great production and in my opinion his playing continues to get better with each CD. Amazing. -Mike Martin Casio Mike Martin Photography Instagram Facebook The Big Picture Photography Forum on Music Player Network The opinions I post here are my own and do not represent the company I work for.
progfusion74 Posted August 19, 2002 Posted August 19, 2002 Best CD I have bought in a while (heard the CD on mp3.com first), is "You go now" by Chroma Key. Can't stop listening to it. So different from what I usually listen to (although I am experimenting a lot these days), but this keeps me spellbound. Otherwise "favorite" purchases include "Tala Matrix" by Tabla Beat Science and "The Universal Migrator Pt. 1: The Dream Sequencer" by Ayreon. Can't wait for my copy of "Moonbird" by Larry Goldings and Co, to show up. Prog http://www.indiegrooves.com/dnm/images/dnm_small.gif My Blog

Amazing.I'd just like to second the endorsement of the new Hornsby record, and make a minor correction: There is NO piano on the record at all. Amazing disk. Best, Michael Erwin Synthtank Studio r33k
Mike Martin Posted August 20, 2002 Author Posted August 20, 2002 Michael, At one point on the disk, I thought I heard a real piano...though its only for a few seconds and its heavily processed. I'll see if I can find it. It does say on the credits something like "Bruce Hornsby plays Baldwin Pianos...though not much on this CD." -Mike Martin Casio Mike Martin Photography Instagram Facebook The Big Picture Photography Forum on Music Player Network The opinions I post here are my own and do not represent the company I work for.

I'll see if I can find it. Please do. I've listened to that record trying to hear some evidence of piano, but found none. Love hearing those tasty EPs and synths, though. I wonder if any of the trade rags have an article on the making of that record. Michael Erwin Synthtank Studio r33k
BP3 Posted August 21, 2002 Posted August 21, 2002 Mike - thought you might find this funny. It's from the Taylor Mesple site you linked in your first post - "As a keyboardist, he's a KORG Keyboards artist endorsee "
Mike Martin Posted August 21, 2002 Author Posted August 21, 2002 Actually not any more. -Mike Martin Casio Mike Martin Photography Instagram Facebook The Big Picture Photography Forum on Music Player Network The opinions I post here are my own and do not represent the company I work for.

Bubbajazz Posted August 22, 2002 Posted August 22, 2002 I'd like to post a "third" on the Hornsby. Funny - very loop oriented, which I usually don't cotton to, but I'm wearing the 1's and 0's out. It's not the playing I am wowed by - it's the writing. I've heard him play "better", but I don't know if I've heard him write any better. It's such a departure from his previous stuff - has anyone read or heard anything about where he is heading?
Mike Martin Posted August 22, 2002 Author Posted August 22, 2002 I'd have to agree. I find myself listening to the lyrics alot more on this CD. There are also only a few places where he's using some of his familiar chord progressions. -Mike Martin Casio Mike Martin Photography Instagram Facebook The Big Picture Photography Forum on Music Player Network The opinions I post here are my own and do not represent the company I work for.
