Our Online Handles

I enjoy the fact that so many of us have online handles. For me, handles create the festive atmosphere of a costume party. They also act as an equalizer between pro and amateur alike, allowing ideas to rise on their own merits, rather than because someone in authority said so.

That second advantage of using handles, however, has begun to fall away as we've all gotten to know each other better. That's okay though, because it's being replaced by the privilege of forming online friendships. This, IMO, far outweighs the advantages of anonymity.

While I've enjoyed being soapbox at this site, there have been times in which I'd rather remove the mask and post without a handle. In the past, when I've felt a more personal or professional touch was best, I've simply signed my true name to the bottom of my posts. However, sometimes that just doesn't feel like enough.

Today, I came to a decision; and I registered a second time as Geoff Grace. (In case you didn't already know it, that's my real name.) This gives me both the option of joining the costume party and of attending in plain clothes whenever I want. Most of the time, I'll probably continue to arrive as soapbox; but I plan to play it by ear.

While I created this thread as a "heads up" in order to avoid confusion, I'm interested in you too. If you post with an online handle, feel free to use this topic as an opportunity to tell us what your real name is. OTOH, if you already post under your given name, this is a chance to share what handle you would use if you had to choose one and why you would make that choice.

Are you ready to take off the mask or try one on? Post below! :)

Enthusiasm powers the world.

My moniker is Michele Doucet. My friends call me 'Nel' as I know loads of other Michele's. When I started sending out demos and stuff, I would get some strange feedback like "when did you start doing electronic music - nice change"...seemed some peeps were getting me confused with Michael Doucet, the leader of cajun band Beausoliel (no relation so far as I know either). So 'Nel' works for me musically as well. But I really don't have a preference as to what you call me, just don't call me late for dinner ;)

Well, in the early days of AOL I was FeltonDave. I gave up that account when they pissed me off with their first bit spate of technical problems ('94? '95?).

That handle doesn't feel right because I don't live in Felton anymore. :D I haven't really used a handle on the 'net since those days, I've just used my name. I guess anonymity when *posting* isn't all that important to me. I like knowing I can lurk in private, but if I'm going to open my (virtual) mouth, I might as well own up to whatever I say.

If I was going to use a handle, and it wasn't taken, I would probably use Gimli. Those of you who have read *both* "Lord of the Rings" and Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon" can probably guess why. :thu:

My real name is "Jeff, TASCAM Guy". Although I sometimes go by "Geoff, TASCAM Guy", or Magpel. If it's any easier, just call me Dan...or Dave, ...Dave LeBlanc... :thu:

By the way, are NelZ and LaurieZ related??? They both have the same last letter.;):P

What a smart ass. I have half a mind to "out" you whether you like it or not, SteadyB. :)

My name is no secret. I'm Jeff Klopmeyer, king marketing weasel for TASCAM. Hence the "TASCAM Guy" handle, lest anyone think I'm secretly pushing my company's agenda while posting here under some more vague moniker.

With a name like "Klopmeyer", you can probably see why some friends like Dave Bryce refer to me as "Kloppy" or some other variation from time to time. This has been a pattern that's followed me my entire life. Anyone with more than seven letters in a last name should expect this.

Funny...I never thought of Nelz as a Michele. This is an interesting thread...I hope more folks contribute.

I regret the handle Magpel. Who knew I was going to hang here for years and make friends? I do, however, rather enjoy being called Mag and Maggie.

Real name: John Burdick.

Handle origin: short form name of the crazed audio theater troup I've been working with for 12 years--The Magnificent Glass Pelican

Rodrigo Saboia Silva

Rod is my 'american' nickname. I think it didn't take more than a week in the US for people to start calling me that. I rather have a nickname than people mispronouncing my name anyhow.

Not that I cared, really - half the people in my high school don't know my name anyways because of a nickname I carried from 6th grade up until I graduated from HS (which my school friends still called me by).

I just hated when people assumed my name was Rodney. Yuck. :bor::D

Never really cared to hide my name. it's in my email address, and I frequently post at yahoogroups with my real name.

It's quite common for people in Brazil to have last names longer than 1 word, which got me a certain amount of grief in the US since data bases and such weren't really made to handle last names with more than one word. My entire last name actually won't fit in a lot of databases since it exceeds the max amount of characters.

I did use Silva as my 'official' last name in the US for simplicity, but in Brazil it's the equivalent of 'Smith' in the US. You can open up the Rio yellow pages and see about 20 pages worth of Silvas.

I answered this in Craig's forum in a barely amusing way, but I guess it's time to fess up.

I'm Keith Emerson, and am interested in hooking up for projects. That nob Greg Lake screwed the last album we did, recorded it and there it sits on the shelf, unreleased.

Okay okay, I'm not! I have a feeling I aimed a little high with that one. ;)

This keyboard solo has obviously been tampered with!

Made a few dollars here and there playing keyboards in East Coast bands 35 years ago. After not touching one for almost 30 years, bought a keyboard last year to amuse myself and see if I could still play (time and money available now that I'm divorced).

SuperBOBus = Bob Wijnen (wijnen is Dutch for "wines", ehhh, several bottles of wine, whatever).

This nickname I got after a party when I tried to get some sleep (hey, it was six in the morning...) and two friends were watching me in my sleeping bag. Then one went to the other (completely stoned), "Hey, he's gonna spin around pretty soon, like a superbobus!" I guess I wasn't stoned enough to understand him but it sounded quite funny. That's the story.

Before the days of us having cable internet, I used a free internet. So of course I had to use the free email at Yahoo. sjordan, stevej, steviej, etc. was taken. So rather than become sjordan99, or stevej666, I used b_3guy@yahoo.com. What's even crazier is b3guy, b3man, hammondman, hammondguy were also taken. It's Steve Jordan, sticking out into the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada's Ocean Playground as it says underneath the Bluenose on our license plates.
