Any Good Deals in Asia?

Recommended Posts

I'm going on trip to Laos and Thailand. I'll be in and out of Bangkok and I was wondering if someone could point me to some good buying opportunities over there (I hear everything is cheap over there if you know where to go) for audo props like mics and other stuff. Thanks Emile

as mentioned above, working girls are pretty cheap (they even come with a STD such as herpes as a bonus)... you can even buy a wife. (though i think you can get a wife cheaper from russia) heroin is a lot cheaper there than it is here. you can also get good, cheap thai food there. fords and chevys cost more there. -d. gauss

Shameless plug: If you go to Phuket I really advise you to check out the "Phuket Boston Tailor", top class fabrics & work. Now that they got my measures I mail-order from them and have been a very satisfied customer every time - just find a tailor that thrives from return business and you will get 1st class clothing. /Mats

Taking them out of the country may be another issue.

Hey Emile, I live and work in SE Asia, I can tell you that if its made local its cheap. If it comes from Europe or the States its bloody expensive! Audio-wise their are Crack Cds with about 100 or so apps that sell for about US $3.00-$5.00. But I'm assuming you don't wanna go there....apart from that its like the others say. Food, women and clothes. As an aside, you may like to know that the Malaysian (where i'm based) Dept of Commerce is having a big anti-piracy campaign aimed at business' using pirated software. Companies are being visited and all computers checked. Fines are quite steep too. Our studio has been notified of a visit 'soon' Going after end-users to cut demand is a good idea as the pirate bosses are, shall we say, well protected and generally very dangerous. PlaYtimE

I just recently came back from a similar trip (Korea). I made guitars the focus of my shopping (even got a factory tour at Samick) but didn't stop there. There where no bagains to be had with electronics but I did pick up a bunch of "noise makers" for the studio. Most cultures have some "out there" musical instruments. I got hand drums, flutes, panpipes.... Keep your eyes and ears open and who knows what you'll find. Of course I'm still trying to figure out how some of these work. Don Goguen folkcafe.com

Yeah, I should've expected the easy jokes reponse! Don't worry about the drugs, I've got that ground covered. And at this point in my life, a wife is really the last thing I would consider buying. Seriously though, I thought maybe I could get those Chinese mics for even cheaper than they are here. Thanks for the Phuket clothing advice, I am going there and to Vietianne also. Good point about exotic instruments, I didn't even think about that. Anymore? Emile

A lot of the people I know in SE Asia seem to go to Singapore for recording equipment. Problem is, they're really not cheap. You can give it a try, though. Other than that, you're looking at HK or Japan, neither of which are cheap, either. ------------------ Ken/Eleven Shadows/d i t h er/Nectar http://www.elevenshadows.com 4 music, travel, more! http://www.cdbaby.com/elevenshadows

My last girlfriend was a Korean girl, she liked to eat dog on her birthday! WOOF! I bet you could get some chockolate covered grasshopper type 'bargains' allthough the FDA might take a dim view if you tried to import them. Don@folkcafe.com brings up an outstanding point. The local instruments and things are usually the best things. *Usually* not the electronic instruments, although it's worth it to keep a lookout for those things, because you just never know. Once in a while, you'll see odd instruments that have been made in China. Most of them quite honestly are horrid, but if you can find something that is really interesting, cool. Another thing I forgot to mention before is, while I was in Bangkok, there was a band playing at a restaurant. The guy couldn't speak any English, and I can't speak Thai, so I couldn't get very much information from him. However, he was playing a four-string guitar (not a bass, but a guitar) with a beautiful dragon headstock on it. It was very cool-looking, and he was playing some quasi-surf lines on it. Actually, the band was an interesting integration of cheesy surf and traditional Thai music/instrumentation, with Thai singing and flute-playing and the curved mallet-instrument (I don't remember the name and I'm at work right now, so I can't look it up). Look for stuff like this. In Burma, they have $25 guitars and all sorts of fascinating instruments, gongs, zithers, and harps. Look for this stuff if that interests you. ------------------ Ken/Eleven Shadows/d i t h er/Nectar http://www.elevenshadows.com 4 music, travel, more! http://www.cdbaby.com/elevenshadows
