want2buy Posted August 3, 2002 Posted August 3, 2002 This sounds like a terrible question if there are any dealers out there, but does anyone know how to find out the dealer's cost on keyboards? Like a blue book for musical instruments? I need to find out what the dealer cost on the Yamaha P120s is.
Dan O Posted August 3, 2002 Posted August 3, 2002 40% off list price is the answer for Yamaha products . dano www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO
S_Gould Posted August 3, 2002 Posted August 3, 2002 Bear in mind, that's only what Yamaha charges for the unit - actual cost to the dealer is going to be higher. He'll have to pay for shipping, finance charges, (almost all dealers have to borrow money to buy stock, or put it on "floor plan" which amounts to the same) pay his emplyees who will handle it and do the paperwork, pay his overhead to stay open - like rent, utilities, taxes, advertising, etc. By the time all is said and done something that retails for $1000 and has a "dealer cost" of $600, may actually cost him $750 - that's what he could sell for to break even - i.e.he makes NO profit at all on the deal. So if a dealer sells something at the manufacturers dealer cost, he is actually losing money on the deal (and he won't be in business long). Sorry for the economics lesson, but I see too many people who don't understand the real "cost' of an item, and think dealers are "ripping them off" by marking things up. It is also one of the reasons small stores can't compete with the catalog houses and online merchants. Scott
