DSears Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 With all due respect to Rob I thought of a question that reminded me of some of the ones he posts. If you had a time machine and could see any artist in their early days which would you pick? A young Stevie Ray in Dallas? The Beatles in Hamburg? - David

Llarion Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Probably the Huey Lewis Sports tour, or Harry Connick Jr's 1991 Big Band tour... Or perhaps Pat Metheny circa 1978... Hmmmm... Cheers! Hmmmm...I hate travelling whether in space or time, and as so much modern music can be enjoyed on CD in the comfort of one's home, I am inclined to look further back in time, though I am sure being at CGBG's in the early days will prove to have been of interest. So here's my list: JS Bach testing a new organ installation. I would also love to hear the Hydraulicus in the Flavian Ampitheatre (aka The Colliseum) but I don't believe any performer's names are known. Being at the premier of "Rites of Spring" at which a riot broke out would be kind of fun too.

Or perhaps Pat Metheny circa 1978... Hmmmm...I was there for all three! I never cared that much for Huey Lewis, but I worked at a rock radio station so I was there for a promotion. The band was a huge crowd pleaser. I just saw Harry Connick last month. He's phoning it in compared to the other time I saw him, on tour in support of "We Are In Love". As for Metheny, I saw the PMG circa 1978-79 at a club called The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY (perhaps my all time favorite venue). For me... - Ellington at the Cotton Club - Miles, Bird, Trane, Monk, or Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard - Bob Marley anytime, anywhere - James Brown at the Apollo

Dave Pierce Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Fun topic! - The premier performance of Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" (6th symphony), in Moscow I presume - Hank Williams Senior at some Okie dive bar - Louis Armstrong anywhere - Bob Marley in Jamaica - Black Sabbath in some divey Manchester pub circa 1970 - Zeppelin mid-70s anywhere But if I could only pick one, I guess it would have to be: - Early Santana with Gregg Rolie. Although give me a nice club with table service, I suspect Woodstock looks and sounds a lot funner than it actually was. I bet getting an ice-cold drink and an order of buffalo wings was *really* tough at that show. If I gave it thought, I could no doubt expand this list a hundred-fold. Superbobus Posted July 25, 2002 Posted July 25, 2002 I wish I recorded the Buddy Rich bus tapes... Wanted to see both Getz, Miles and Dizzy and they all passed away two weeks before the concert. Any early concerts of these would do, also Bird, Trane, Bill Evans, Duke, Count (with Sinatra or Joe Williams) and especially MONK. Excuse me while I'm forgetting anybody, oh yeah, Ella and Sarah of course! Recording sessions I would like to have been with: Cannonball Adderley with Nancy Wilson Cannonball live recordings Stevie - all '70s recordings Same goes for Steely Dan. Prince - early recordings until Batman, but especially the ones with that '80s sound. http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.
