Summer NAMM - Hello?

Doesn't the summer NAMM in Nashville start like, today? I'm kind of surprised nobody here has been making any noise about it, other than a brief mention on the vaporware thread.

Is anyone here going? Anything cool expected to turn up? I know I'm anxious to hear about the new Yamaha S90. Also, I'd love to hear that the Minimoog Voyager is finished and ready to go. Any news on the Neuron?

Anyway, that's my "please check out..." list. Thanx in advance for any cool news! :)

Peace all,

Steve

Digi 002 news came out yesterday.

And new some info on 4 new Roland SRX Boards (that use SR-JV library sounds) turned up on their German site yesterday as well.

There was also the Alesis Ion, whose announcement showed up in an Electronic Musician email - discussed in its own thread here.

I think the show opens around 10 a.m. Central time, so quite a bit of news should be hitting shortly.

Okay, here's a brief report...

Not much there that hasn't been talked about here already. No real surprises...

I played on the S90 for a while - it's exactly what you'd expect (and I mean that in a very good way). The triple strike piano is quite impressive - I believe that's the first time that's been done in ROM.

The ION looked interesting. The instrument's industrial design is very spartan. The unit that they brought with them was not passing any audio, not did it appear to have an OS in it - its display was doing a "moving billboard" of the product's feature set; consequently, I'm inclined to doubt that it'll be out before sometime early next year. It should also be noted that it has apple green end caps. Not sure that'd have been my first choice... ;)

I thought that the little Korg synth was pretty darn cool, actually...I dig the vibe - kinda like an old Casio CZ101. Basically an MS2000 for $499.

I spent a bunch of time with the Generalmusic ProMega, too. Really nice board - great sounds. I actually found the simplicity of the interface to be very refreshing - no manual needed at all.

The Roland XV-2020 is, in fact, basically just an au courant JV-1010. Nice move on their part compiling the best and most popular of the SR-JV sounds on SRX ROMs. Very smart.

The Voyager looks and sounds great. The Tactex has been changed to a new material the the Moog folks developed themselves, but it still transmits X, Y and Z parameters - and it was functional. I didn't ask when it was shipping...I imagine that we'll hear about it when it's ready.

No shows included Digi, Mackie, Kurzweil, Emu, MOTU, Emagic, Steinberg and more than a few others....

...and no sign whatsoever of the Neuron.

Does the 2020 take the new beefed up expansion boards??? (I'm assuming the JV-1010, which I have 2, does not)

Yeah, I've heard the 2600's piano. I was under the impression that it was just that same 4 meg version of the MicroPiano sample that came when you got the daughter board for the 2500.

I didn't know that was a triple strike...I checked, though, and you're right - they added two more layers (4 meg each) to it for the 2600. :thu:

Thanks for the info!

Back from the show... completely brain dead... can't post yet... will let you know when thinking ability returns.

But it was good to see dB, s_gould, dano and the ubiquitous Craig Anderton there.

Glad to be back in L.A., out of the humidity hell. Love Nashville, otherwise.

did anyone see the Triton LE 88? Just wondering because its suppose to have the same weighted keys as the TS88 and has the new 16meg piano sample built in. It looks like releasing this was in response to the S90....

What's the deal about triple strike pianos. Are they sampling each string, or what?

A "Triple Strike" sample is one that is sampled at three dynamic levels.

Actually the PC2 series had the first Triple Strike sample in a keyboard's ROM. The additional layers used in this Triple Strike piano are available on the K2600 series.... as an option (ROM3) so this is not built into the stock K2600. With the ROM expansion on the K2600 they are also utilizing the unique capabilities of KDFX to model the sound of the piano when the damper pedal is depressed.

Man, I am WAY underinformed...or was, anyway!

Thanks, Mike! :thu:
