Any MUST sees in New Orleans??

My wife and I are going to New Orleans on weds. We are staying in a hotel smack dab in the middle of the French Quarter. Do you know of any live music 'must sees'? I not too particular of the venue, either. We're then going to Pennsacola for a couple of days and would seek suggestions there, too.

Any suggestions??

Spend a long night bar-hopping on Bourbon Street and enjoy some of the best blues and Jazz music anywhere. If nothing else, check out the Preservation Hall Jazz Band--they are a regular on Bourbon Street.

There is also a House of Blues in NO and some other "chain" bars.

There is no place on Earth like Bourbon Street though.

Me too... Preservation Hall... you can count on those guys. The rest of Bourbon Street is kinda hit or miss, depending on the day and the week.

I like the duelling pianists at Pat O'Briens' (so sue me), especially when most of the other places start closing down. :D

Man, you are in for a good time. There are some great bookstores and antiques on Rue Royale too, if you take a stroll in the afternoon. Court of Two Sisters is a good place for brunch when you are travelling as a couple.

Take in the Cafe' DuMonde too for breakfast.

There is also a Hard Rock Cafe near by.

Tour the Superdome.

Take in the Riverwalk too. (it was hit by a barge a few years back, but I am sure they fixed it back--great view of the mighty Mississippi.

And you have to take some time to ride a streetcar through the Garden District and to listen to some street musicians.

There used to be a guy who played solo blues piano in a window of a bar on Bourbon Street. Don't know the name of the place, but that is one of my "dream gigs" to get in my later years.

Oh yea....gorge on some pralines--outstanding.

God I love NO! Now I am jealous of you too.

Thanks for the advice, guys! I did try CitySearch.com and found almost too much information. Besides Preservation Hall was ranked #10 on their list, and chances are I wouldn't have made it there. I truly value all of your opinions! I'm sure we're in for a realy treat. I'll let you know...

Yeah. Our list is skewed towards musicians. :D

They do 30 minute sets and they don't kick you out if you want to stay for more than one set. Most people have them on their "been there done that list" and leave quickly. So the line (though long) moves pretty quickly.

Would you give us your impressions? I haven't been there in a year or so but I was there 3-4 times a year before that.

Cafe du Monde has awesome beignets but you got to watch the pigeon factor and don't use the restrooms. The market next door is pretty cool for picking up things cajun, like sausages, spices and crawfish. Some of the merhants will air freight stuff to you too.

MMMMmmmmm...be sure to order beneighs (ben-yays, I'm not sure how to spell it but thats the pronounciation). They are the most delicious breakfast treat - think fried doughboys meets doughnuts - topped with powdered sugar.:thu:

Not too healthy, but not to be missed!

I'll do that, Jerry.

I'm really trying to figure out why I'm double and triple posting here. Weird! My browser occasionally tells me I need to 'retry' and refresh my browser. I'm sorry and would like to know how to prevent this.

Crescent City's best joint: Maple Leaf Bar. Just get there, you'll like it! Tipitinas can be nice too.

IMO, much of Burbon Street is a tourist trap, French Quarter is so much better/nicer in other parallel & crossing streets.

If you are rich, go to the Sazerac hotel, they have the greatest bar you have ever seen. (BTW, home of the Sazerac cocktail).

Garden district is very nice, streetcar is best way to get there.

The food, check out the food! (Craw fish, red beans & rice, 'Po Boy sandwiches and on and on...)

That's the bidet...Although I've never consumed one, my guess would be the beneigh is way tastier! ;) However, the bidet works wonders on the bum.

Sorry to correct (I´m Spanish, after all)...those pastries are actually called beignets. Delicious, indeed, with café au lait.

I found New Orleans to be the only place I visited in the USA with any eating interest, but boy, it is worth it. Cooking in New Orleans has personality and tradition, a fusion of French, African and Spanish cooking, I loved it.
