For those who have never had a chance to see it, Bravo is re-running "Inside the Actors Studio" with Billy Joel on Monday night (7/15) at 8:00 p.m. EDT. This one runs for 2 hours and is well worth it. Check it out!

Very inspiring. Billy's always been one of my all-time mentors anyway, but this show just made me glad of it. As legendary as he is, he obviously hasn't let stardom go to his head. It was amazing to hear him talk about writing all these timeless songs with the nonchalance of your next-door neighbor talking about trimming the lawn. And such a sense of humor about it, too. Really refreshing to see someone of his caliber and fame turn out to be such a genuine, down to earth guy! :thu:

One interesting observation; Apparently there was someone off camera who was in charge of keeping Billy's lyric book turned to whatever song Billy was talking about. A few times when Billy suddenly jumped up to go to the piano, you could see someone running away from it just before Billy sat down! :D

Really inspiring show, I wonder if it's possible to buy a video of it. I didn't see anything on the closing credits, but I'd buy one! :)

Peace all,

Steve

Just checked Bravo's website. Apparently there's no way to buy it ( :( ), but it's showing again at 5:00 PM Eastern time (2:00 Pacific) today.

If you're reading this and haven't seen the show yet, check it out! If you're not a Billy Joel fan yet, you will be after seeing the show! :)

Peace all,

Steve

The Liberty DeVito story about the song "Honesty" is priceless. I heard another story about Liberty making up lyrics. The band was rehearsing "Just the Way You Are", and it was around the time of Joel's split from Christie Brinkley. Devito sang out (on the hook of the song) "...she took the house, she took the car...".

The way I heard it, it was before Christie when Billy was splitting from his first ex. Billy didn't like the song much anyway, so he'd get to daydreaming while he sang it. One night he drew a blank and watched Liberty's mouth to get the words. Without thinking about what he was singing, he just sang the words Liberty was singing, and a lot of the audience boo'd. :D That was when they decided to give the song a rest from concerts, because Billy just couldn't get into it anymore.

The story about "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" was pretty cool, too. :)

Saw that show quite a while back. Joel is a very interesting talker, I must say. I liked the section where he disses those "songbook" publishers, because they screwed up the transcripts to "Just The Way You Are". So many people, a lot of them in these forums as well, rely so heavily on those publications that it makes Joel's statements about them laughable. Final editing of those rags should be left to the composer, and it's not. For shame. Even those hokey transcriptions in magazines seem to be off-kilter somewhat. Friends of mine who have tried them claim they find themselves so far off the mark of the original release that it's criminal.

Billy Joel has a good point.

So was the "pasta and scampi" analogy of "New York State of Mind" and other AABA compositions :D

(You're probably right about the "Just the Way You Are" story, Steve.)

Baby, did I get a kick on Billy's take on the typical "lounge" piano players. :D You know, the "dime-a-dozen" type that blend in the scene like fire hydrants and play in a very "schmaltzy" style. They certainly do serve their purpose, though. He kinda mocked them, but he can get away with that due to the incredible body of work he has blessed us with.

Joe Pine (60's talk show host who sported a wooden leg) to Frank Zappa -- "So, with your long hair, I guess that makes you a woman." Frank Zappa's response -- "So, with your wooden leg, I guess that makes you a table."
