Dan O Posted July 7, 2002 Posted July 7, 2002 Ticket prices are getting way out of hand . In todays market , you are usually paying to see old bands still making money off of their name . OR You see a whole bunch of bands promoting some type of FEST ...OZZZFEST etc.........half the bands you never heard of . Dave Mathews is being overplayed IMHO . Concert's are not what they used to be and the music coming out today is not that interesting . get a guitar ...put a few record scratches on it and .............you may have a hit . Have you seen a recent concert that was reasonably priced and blew you away ? www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO

sbrock1san.rr.com Posted July 7, 2002 Posted July 7, 2002 I saw Vital Information with Steve Smith on drums, Frank Gambale on guitar, Tom Coster on organ and e.piano, and Baron Browne on bass a couple of months ago in a tiny little club in San Diego. Tickets were $15 and we were 10 feet from the stage so you could see and here every glorious detail. It was daring jazz/fusion that only seasoned veterans can pull off. A very fun evening. I don't go to many shows because of cost anymore. I wanted to see Jethro Tull but tickets were $56 a piece and I would have had to take my girlfriend because she is the Tull fan. That's too much for an old out-of-date act. No offense to their fine musicianship, but it's true.
Canadian Posted July 7, 2002 Posted July 7, 2002 Last week I saw James Carter on sax with Gerald Gibbs on Hammond B3 and Leonard King on drums. The show was featured in our Jazz Festival which I was volunteering for so I got in free. It was absolutely amazing making me want to by any kind of a B3 clone to even approach the music that came off that stage. Gerald Gibbs was playing this beautiful B3 with a real nice chewy tone. I tried it out during the sound check. wow.
daBowsa Posted July 7, 2002 Posted July 7, 2002 I saw 'Addison Groove Project' out of Boston this weekend for $10 - the keyboard player had a Rhodes, Clav, JP8000 and a dual-manual Korg hammond-clone...awesome! Rippin' bass player, drummer, tenor, alto and the singer/guitar player picked up a trumpet for some of the heads! Wow! They're out of Boston but just started a mini-US tour - I recommend checking them out if you see them listed in your local paper. I too was frustrated with the current live music scene, until I stumbled upon a whole world of great music that I never knew existed. Being a gigging musician, I thought I had a decent grasp on 'the scene' and would balk many, many times when a friend tried to get me to come to a show of his choosing. I'd ask "Who is it again? $10? I don't know if I can swing that for some noname..." But EVERY time I walked into these clubs (clubs that I've played many times to crowds of less than 50) there were easily 350-400 people dancing and paying attention to GREAT musicians on stage. I can't remember the last time I'd seen an uproar of appropriately timed applause following a keyboard solo. Oh yeah, it was the last time I was in a jazz club. Silly me for thinking that jazz fans were the only ones with manners. I HIGHLY recommend checking out www.jambase.com and typing in your area code for a list of shows near you - I have yet to be let down. --Ben.
Blues Disciple Posted July 7, 2002 Posted July 7, 2002 I went to Carowinds/Six flags last week and for $ 40.00 admission got to ride the rides all day, (could've gone swimming too) and then got to see Skillet and Third Day in concert. Skillet was good, a little heavy for my taste, but Third Day was awesome! It was my first "real" Christian music concert and it was outstanding. The music was great and you could feel the Spirit everywhere. I got alot out of the concert both musically, and spiritually. Plan to go to another concert like this one---only Steven Curtis Chapman---in September. Blues Disciple Posted July 7, 2002 Posted July 7, 2002 One thing that has changed the concert experience for me is the open-air coliseum or palladium or amphitheatre venues. In summer it is strange to see the opening bands and even some of the headliner playing in daylight. The sound I think is different (and not necessarily better) and it makes fro a different experience then the concert in the coliseum traditional venue. In some ways it seems less of "an event" than going to the dark, air-conditioned, "official" coliseum. And it doesn't cost any less for sure. Just my $.02 BD "With the help of God and true friends I've come to realize, I still have two strong legs and even wings to fly" Gregg Allman from "Ain't Wastin Time No More"

Have you seen a recent concert that was reasonably priced and blew you away ?Oh sure. Tony Levin Band at the Alladdin in Portland. Seats were $16 I think and you can buy them at the theatre and avoid the usual $7 each in "convenience" fees (plus a $4 "service" fee) from the ticket outlets. Or Marcia Ball at the same venue for something like $25. Both wonderful concerts. Pity Tony did not pull a full house - a lot of people missed a great concert. And the band all came out after and chatted to the audience and autographed cds. Marcia too stays until every last fan with a CD has an autograph.
Dave Pierce Posted July 8, 2002 Posted July 8, 2002 Well, I have tickets to see Gregg Rolie at Slim's in The City on July 26. The tickets were only $15. I fully expect the show to be worth every penny, but I'll let you know on the 27th. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. I wants to get funked up. My Funk/Jam originals project: http://www.thefunkery.com/

With a name like progfusion, can I assume you like progressive rock and fusion ? I'm a prog and jazz/fusion fan myself and I play keys, guitar, and keyboards. I live in Scripps Ranch.
marino Posted July 8, 2002 Posted July 8, 2002 I just gave up on Keith Jarrett's trio next concert in Rome. The tickets are up to 100 euros (1 euro = 1 dollar, roughly) and that's just too much. I feel a bit insulted, so I decided not to go. (I've seen the trio a couple of times already)
Roto Posted July 8, 2002 Posted July 8, 2002 I don't go to very many concerts. I can still find reasonable prices around here though. They have a series at the zoo(!) where Randy Newman, Bruce Hornsby and Robert Cray are all under $20. Labor Day weekend of every year is Bumbershoot , "The Mother of all Festivals." For $15 you can see Lou Reed, Jewel, Wilco, Dave Edmunds, Everclear, Sonic Youth, Dan Hicks, Ani DiFranco, Wyclef Jean, Nappy Roots, etc. etc. etc. Bumbershoot usually is enough for me every year unless there is someone I really want to go see. One year I did spring something like $30 a day for WOMAD which was 3 days. It was worth it though. I saw Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos and Jimmy Cliff on the same day and they do a huge jam for the last show with every performer who is still there.

Only shows I have seen since I moved to San Diego were the California Guitar Trio with Tony Levin, and Bela Fleck. Yes, I am a big fan of prog rock and jazz/fusion. Saw him many years ago in a much stronger performance.
meccajay Posted July 9, 2002 Posted July 9, 2002 Blew me away... Meshell Ndegeochello!!!!!!!! Many of you may remember her from her 1st CD, and the featured songs: "Deadlocks" and "If that was your boyfriend he wasnt last night" etc. This year she's got another mega-funk CD out called "Cookie- The Anthropological Mix Tape", and it's bad as hell, but the clincher is.... This has got to be the baddest road band Ive heard since 80's Pfunk featuring Dennis Chambers on drums! My personal belief is that no matter WHAT kind of music you're into, you'd LOVE her and her band, yes she is a bald headed, politically incorrect, bisexual bass playin activist, but you'd forget that in about 1 song if you heard this group live. I just cant put it into words how that show made me feel, but it was one of those real musical journey's I wont forget...evah!! And I cant forget since this is the keyboard corner....Fred Pena on keys is from another fucking planet!! That's the 1st time Ive ever heard a Nord-lead used to it's potential! Ive actually done a couple session's with Fred waaaay back in the day in DC, but damn has this cat seasoned. I think everyone will nominate Fred as Keyboardist of the year after this show! Anyway guys, check out this show if it comes anywhere near you, and you'll get the fonkiest most musically magical show you've seen in years!! TROLL . . . ish.

She talked about things like how she felt it was important to be in the Musicians' Union and she was rather ambivolent about Napster and was more interested in getting people to go to concerts to support artists because that's where she makes her money.

Superbobus Posted July 11, 2002 Posted July 11, 2002 North Sea Jazz Festival coming up this week... FREAKING EXPENSIVE! But the best concerts are just before that, which is tomorrow: North Sea Heats The Hague (I saw Tower of Power - with David Garibaldi! - Dave Weckl Band, Cubanissimo, Chris Potter and some other bands for free at this warming up in the past). And of course the North Sea Jazz Gala, which is for VIP's only, but I'm playing there tomorrow... Just read this one today: nostalgia ain't what it used to be... http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.

I meant that my days of paying $85 to join 60,000 people to see a band do an overblown, lip-synched, pre-recorded backing tracked band perform poorly with horrible sound quality in a venue that doubles as a place to watch pro football games is no longer my idea of a good time. I'd much rather see lesser-known acts perform in an intimate setting, be they rock, dance, jazz, classical or otherwise. And yeah, I've seen some good shows in arenas. But it's just not my cup of tea anymore. I can't think of one band that's popular enough to fill a sports arena that I would pay to see. Or even go for free. I can not think of one act that I would really say ......" I gotta see this show " . That was the purpose of this post . I think that the music scene ( what's heard on the radio ) is at a LOW point . If I was into RAP artist , than maybe ? But I am not . Hip hop is taking guys who can not sing and basically pushing them on to the scene . NELLY ? give me a break ! Ja rule ? have you really listened to this guy sing or Rap ? not happening IMHO . Which brings me to another topic . My african american friends are listening to a totally different music scene . Is it all just black and white ? dano lynard skynard ..........$38 to $68.00 to see them at a "B" arena ! nothing new and everything old . American music is in trouble . www.esnips.com/web/SongsfromDanO
