Llarion Posted July 7, 2002 Posted July 7, 2002 I've been plowing through a slew of emails, haven't been spending much time on the PC. Just found the MP3. Sounds great, that keyboard is so versatile! Clean and crisp! As for XP vs. 2K, XP is built on the 2 kernel, but is a lot friendlier, and if your machine is fairly new, it is even more stable. I have never had a blue screen or spontaneous reboot with XP, I had several under 2K. I only reboot my machine every couple of weeks or when a progam install demands it... Cheers! Esoterra Posted July 8, 2002 Posted July 8, 2002 I wish I had as much luck with XP. My computer crashes, and restarts itself without warning. My computer is 2 weeks old. Go figure! Eso

Go figure! EsoGo get a hardware diagnostic program and run it. I have "check it" which seems to work for me. Cannot say I have researched what is best. There's a good chance your problem is hardware rather than XP itself. Note that you need software that works at the level of the "bare metal". Programs like Norton that only run under the OS don't do the level of checking you need.

That, or any other email program that allows incoming mail to execute programs on your computer should be removed and not used. In theory an emailer that allows Java programs to run should not be a problem because of Java's security model but I am not well enough up on the topic to know if the VM's in common use enforce this adequately or whether there are security holes that can be exploited.
Llarion Posted July 8, 2002 Posted July 8, 2002 Or, you could just make sure that you run an antivirus program and/or a firewall that filters email, no need to change platforms. ZoneAlarm is freeware and clamps any Outlook executable attachments down hard, and all 3 major tier 1 antivirus programs from McAfee, Symantec, and Computer Associates all intercept VB script and other executable attachments and known virii in most major email platforms... RABid Posted July 8, 2002 Posted July 8, 2002 I run Win2K on my Sonar II computer and WinXP on my GigaStudio computer. Both are networked for internet access across DSL. The XP compuer would frequently loose access to the net while talking on ICQ and I would have to restart to get the connection back. I think the problem was based on a combination of Black Ice firewall protection, ICQ, and Real Player. I uninstalled Real Player and the problem went away. Robert This post edited for speling.
