Dan South Posted July 5, 2002 Posted July 5, 2002 I don't recall the discussion often turning towards baseball here (except during the playoffs), but I wanted to take a moment to honor Mr. Ted Williams, one of the finest athletes in all of sports. Although he played well before my time, I knew all of my life that the name Ted Williams was synonymous with greatness. Farewell, Slugger. Deepest sympathies to your fans and family. The Black Knight always triumphs!
sbrock1san.rr.com Posted July 5, 2002 Posted July 5, 2002 I live just off the Ted Williams Parkway in San Diego. I don't watch baseball but he was a great local sports icon.
Magpel Posted July 5, 2002 Posted July 5, 2002 Yup. I'm a hardcore Yankee fan, but I have no trouble saying that Ted was probably the greatest hitter ever. When you consider he gave 6+ years of his baseball prime to serve in 2 (!) wars, his accomplishments are unbleivable. He'd probably be the leader in just about every career offensive category. This is the first I've heard of his pasisng, though he's been ill for a long while. Check out the Sweet Clementines CD at bandcamp
BP3 Posted July 5, 2002 Posted July 5, 2002 All the best in the afterlife, Ted. Somewhere I've a photo of Ted with my dad and some other marines that was taken in Korea. Gotta dig that one up. My dad said that he was quite a pleasant guy, unlike the press accountings of him at that time.
Blues Disciple Posted July 6, 2002 Posted July 6, 2002 I am an avid Red Sox fan. Got a picture of Ted sliding home past Yogi Berra in the office right next to my panaramic print of Fenway Park. The baseball world has lost one of their greatest and one of the last reminders of what baseball was. Red Sox fans across the world should shed a tear and send up a prayer. Our most important hero is gone. I heard something on TV about Ted that I did not know. Although he gave up several seasons to serve in WWII due to the draft, he VOLUNTARILY left baseball a second time to serve in Korea. If he had not been called away or left to serve our country, he could have been THE greatest and the leader in all hitting categories. A sad day for fans everywhere.
