Originally posted by Dogfur: I think I remember her singing on the "We Are The World" benefit song with all these other artists, and her one verse had more balls than the entire rest of the tune.
As hokey as We Are The World seemed, there were some wonderful performances on it. Cyndi's definitely stands out. Lots of unique voices; Bruce Springsteen, Huey Lewis, Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, MJ, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Darryl Hall, Cyndi. It was a real smorgasbord of human vocal timbres. Jeff, Tascam Guy, glad to see someone give Phil Collins some credit, even if it's only half-praise. ;) He's done some really cheesy songs over the years, but he's also done some fantastic work, as well. And I'd hardly call No Son Of Mine, Another Day In Paradise, or even I Can't Dance taking the easy route to more $$$. He's a clown as well as a creative artist. Why should the former preclude someone from being the latter, as well? For many years, a good friend of mine who is a martial arts instructor in several styles of Kung Fu had only disdain for the screen work of Jackie Chan. To him, Jackie made a mockery of the arts by using it in such slapstick fashion. It took a long time for him to appreciate that Jackie Chan does respect the art, but has a wonderful sense of humor as well. This, to me, seems a perfect analogy for Phil Collins in music.

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman

I'm also a bit surprised at the overwhelming positive reaction to this thread (almost like the Kate Bush thread). While I really enjoy some of Cyndi's stuff (Time After Time, True Colors...), I have seen and heard a couple of performances that I didn't like (like Cyndi's appearance on VH1's Divas). Sometime's Cyndi's voice is wonderful. I don't think its unique quality is suited to all types of singing, though. Looks like this time around she's taking an interesting approach to promoting her music. Touring with Cher, yet making personal appearances at bookstores (like she did at the Borders here in Fort Lauderdale). I bet the personal appearances are a far better promotional tool than the Cher dates, but I could be wrong. Gotta admire her for doing her thing, though. :thu:

The real appeal of CL is that (1) she doesn't get trapped into "reciting" her songs. She performs them often in ways that are subtly different & (2) she is very human in her relationship to her audience. That's why (go ahead & laugh, we already heard lots of that on the "grudging appreciation of...?" thread) Pink reminds us of her.

I loved Cyndi's performance in Roger Water's The Wall Live in Berlin. I thought she was an interesting choice, and she really played the part of the 'disillusioned schoolgirl' well. However, Andy Fairweather Lowe seemed less than impressed with her antics during his guitar solo...
