Cyndi Lauper

I was a fan of a few Cyndi Lauper tunes back in the day, but never a diehard listener. Time After Time, True Colors, Money Changes Everything... and yeah, I even like Girls Just Wanta Have Fun. My WIFE, however, was a big fan. So it was somewhat ironic that I should have the day off instead of Denise. She called me up and informed me that Cyndi was going to play at Tower Records in Nashville, before the concert opening for Cher tonight. After taking my little girl to story time at the Nashville Main Library, checking out the travelling display of the Declaration of Independence there as well, we headed towards Tower. I circled back to a hotel I've gigged at alot, to find parking and ended up parked on the street across from CL's tour bus. :D It was a beautiful day in Nashville, so we walked to Tower, 3 blocks away. The promotional gig was wonderful. She played an acoustic version of Time After Time, then 3 new songs. Lilly and I were tucked in a corner and ended up standing over CL's FOH mixer, painfully doing his job on a Spirit Folio instead of the 4K he mixes on nightly.  He couldn't even see the stage from behind the throng of people. I can relate, cause I've been there! :( He'd traded a Clair Bros. line array for some consumer EV boxes and almost no EQ. Ouch! It was a lot of fun. I've seen a few impromptu concerts by big name artists and encourage anyone who's available to check them out. They're usually pretty good. (At least here, in Nashville.) And how was your day?

Yeah! CL seems much more "human" than a lot of the performers with whom she might be compared. Saw her recently on TV & she continues to be a quite dynamic re-interpreter of her own back catalog.

4 -5 years ago, I moseyed into my local Borders bookstore at like 11:00am & Kip Winger was there playing an acoustic in front of 8 people. I was never a Winger fan, although his old guitarist was good, Reb Beach??(I cant believe I pulled that name out of the air..) Anyway, he was playing 'new age' acoustic style music that was quite good. I met him, we talked music, Alice Cooper, etc., had a good time. Not bad for free! I got home an hour or two later and the wife says, 'what the hell took you so long?!' It was fun saying, 'oh, I was just hangin' with my buddy, Kip Winger'. :) Matt
In two days, it won't matter.

I've always been a huge fan of Cyndi Lauper. I love her voice. She not afraid to really belt it out live, often sending shivers up my spine. Yeah those "impropmtu" type acoustic concerts are great. About a year ago I saw Richard Marx perform at my high school. Just him, a keyboard, and another guitarist. I think everyone was shocked at how great the show was. No one wanted to leave! And it was totally for charity. Very classy guy.

What in the world happened to Cindi? Like she dropped off the edge of the earth years ago. Loved her voice, spunk and tunes. Lack of material? Lost her writers and producers? Anyone here venture a guess? Lionel Ritchie is one thing, but what happened to Cindi? Inquiring minds want to know!

Joe Pine (60's talk show host who sported a wooden leg) to Frank Zappa -- "So, with your long hair, I guess that makes you a woman." Frank Zappa's response -- "So, with your wooden leg, I guess that makes you a table."

I first heard her on a track titled "I Had a Love" from her time with the band Blue Angel. I still remember it today (about 20 years later). It was a Phil Spector-esque tune, with a huge lead vocal from Cyndi. I'd love to hear that song again, but the record is out of print.

Speaking of which...I've been trying to track down the name of a movie she was in. I only saw it from about halfway through. It was her, Jeff Goldblum, and I think Peter Falk (Columbo)...sort of a treasure hunter "Jewel of the Nile" type plot line...they're out to find some treasure and of course there are bad guys at every turn. Know which movie I'm talking about?

Tedster, the movie you're thinking of is "Vibes". Pretty funny in an off-beat quirky kind of way - must have been written with JG in mind. ;) Scott

Hippie/Matt, I was about to relate the same story. Borders' books, north side of Indianapolis, don't remember when. Wouldn't say he was doing 'new age' acoustic stuff, but nicer acoustic versions of the material from the 'This Conversation Feels Like a Dream' disc, and some older Winger stuff. Very pleasant to talk to, handled some hecklers very well, very even-keeled
I've upped my standards; now, up yours.

[/b][/quote]Sort of. She divorced her manager for one thing. Actually, she never really went away. She just was never willing to sell-out. The music industry changed -she didn't. So no contract... I think she's making use of the Internet to sell records these days, She's very likeable. Not as young as I thought she was either! I think she's in her early 50's now. I'm glad she has stuck to her guns over the years, and that she can still draw a crowd. Hell, even those arrogent snobs over on Anderton's forum at MusicPlayer.com seem to like her  ! I do believe she has arrived!!! :)

Cyndi is definitely a no compromise girl, but also one of the nicest humans I have ever met. I remember her coming to a Miles (Davis) show in Europe in the mid 80's, and she stood next to me at the monitor console crying when he played his version of "Time after Time". She has a true passion for her music, and is one of the most powerful and talented voices in music.

Hope this is helpful.

Wow! I was expecting a somewhat different reaction to this thread. More akin to the welcome Phil Collins and Madonna threads get here. ;) I'm glad to see there are others here who appreciate Cyndi Lauper for what she does. She has a unique style and, like many wonderful musicians, accentuates the positive talents she possesses rather than trying to be something she's not. She was also hilarious, yesterday. She had a story about Anna Nicole Smith in reference to her (Cyndi's) new song, "It's Hard To Be Me." :D

Thanks for the name of the movie. I always hate that when you see a little bit of a movie, but they don't tell you what movie you just watched, and all the TV guide copies are nowhere to be found. I like Cyndi Lauper's singing voice. Her speaking voice is another matter. Makes Fran Drescher sound soothing. :D

Naw... Cyndi is top shelf in every respect. I've seen some bio-type shows on her and I continue to be more and more impressed by her not just for her magnificent voice, but as a really neat woman and person. She's a totally impressive package. Boggs

I never was a Cyndi Lauper fan. Thought her voice was really good, just couldn't get into the tunes. Then, about a year or so ago, TNT had a special that was a tribute to Joni Mitchell. Cyndi was on and did a cover of Joni's "Carey" that knocked me outa my chair! I had new respect for that woman ever since... Whitefang
I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

And I was the genius who, in the early 80's, said that Cyndi was gonna have the career and that Madonna was a flash-in-the-pan. Good thing I kept my day job. bob

My Collins bashing has nothing to do with the man's lack of talent...he has it in droves. An incredible songwriter and drummer, and not a bad singer if you like that kind of thing. ;) It's an even greater crime that he takes the easy road to make money instead of...never mind, I won't start again. Cyndi Lauper is great. 'Nuff said. - Jeff
