Magpel
Okay, lessee. First, Geoff, thanks for your concern. I am fine. Been very busy, which leads to... Lakers Fans: It's coming. I've just endured a 4 week block of family reunions, first my wife's and then mine. Yankee games, cruises on the Hudson, camping on the Hudson, museum of natural history, more BBQs than you can shake a side of beef at, a rolling stomach virus, and a gig with my brother at a local club. My soul is shredded. On this Saturday, I am travelling with "the guys" to the Mohegan Sun casino to celebrate my 40th birthday. A day or three after that, I will photograph myself with a tampon stuck to my head. My wife, Beatlemaniac that she is, even knows what kind of tampon Lennon wore to the Grammys. YOu won't be disappointed. I have no intentions of skipping this bet. Just chill out. Let the thread slide. I'll resurrect it and you'll have your fun. P.S., the Knicks signed Doleac. soapbox
John, I'm glad to read that you've been busy with mostly good stuff. I can see how it might be a drag though when the good stuff gets so crammed in that you can't see straight! For future reference, I think that toping it all off with a stomach virus probably isn't a good idea. Your call though... Also, HaPpY BiRtHdAy in advance. My brother and sister are both Leos too, so you're in good company! Enthusiasm powers the world. Craig Anderton's Archiving Article

steadyb
http://kcal9.com/nycMarket/LargeImages/535734771 I was lucky enough to speak with Chick Hearn on the phone several times prior to Laker games during the 80's. I even won a pair of Reeboks once by correctly predicting the final score. Before a Laker playoff game in Seattle (on Mother's Day), I got a chance to meet him and speak with him for about 5-10 minutes, and he was as warm and sincere as I could have ever hoped he would be. He really was a great person and there won't be another like him. I'm very, very saddened by the news.
Magpel
Sorry about this, Mr. B. It's cool that you got to meet him. Perhaps a tampon on my forehead will cheer you up? ETA: Thursday. Check out the Sweet Clementines CD at bandcamp

steadyb
A private funeral service for friends and family will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Martin of Tours Church in Brentwood, the Lakers announced Tuesday night. The public is invited to attend a daylong tribute to Hearn at Staples Center. People who drop by the arena between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday will be allowed to visit Hearn's broadcast booth and sign a guest book. Each visitor is encouraged to bring a new children's book appropriate for grades kindergarten through fifth, which will be donated to local school libraries and nonprofit organizations. soapbox
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, and James Worthy. Larry Bird, Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, and Danny Ainge. I just watched a replay of the Celtics overtime victory at home against the Lakers in Game 2 of the 1984 NBA Finals (on the NBA Channel). The Celtics went on to take the series in seven games. It was fun to see the lead go back and forth between these two great teams and to watch these superstars play again. Thank goodness for videotape and cable TV! Man, except for all of the tattoos, today's players are so much more clean-cut than they were back then! The big 'fros of the seventies were gone, but I'm not sure that any of the Lakers were without facial hair ... very amusing! Enthusiasm powers the world. Thanks to mom and dad for raising me to honor my commitments. Thanks to the late great Chick for all the cool basketball expressions, And finally...I just want to say this has been fun. I think I can speak for Steve and Jeff as well when I say the haters put up a good fight. Some very witty remarks sprinkled among an ocean of denial of the truth. We enjoyed watching the ebbs and flows of wafer thin optimism being doused with a cold wet bucket of reality every few games. When the Lakers started the season 17-1, the writing was on the wall, yet with the Kings desperately clinging to a meaningless 1 to 2 game lead all season, gave the haters a reason, however false, to think this might be their year. But instead, Jeff, Steve, and the other enlightened and wise among us, were treated to something better than a 15 game sweep through the playoffs... ...first, Portland with a 6 point lead, the ball, and 40 seconds left...not quite enough to hang on. ...then San Antonio taking one of two in L.A. ...could it be??? ...yes??? ...uh, no. Ahhh, Sacramento even after having to watch the Lakers lose game 3 in almost a blowout...at Steve's, ...with Dave Bryce riding us the whole way... ...and a 24 point lead in game 4...and a 2 point lead with .01 seconds left, maybe??? perhaps??? possibly??? ...uuhh,...no. ...again Game 6... game 7 (in Sacramento) ...where's Waldo, er, I mean Webber??? And then the formality of puttin' the broom to the Nets. Apparently everyone but Dan was reading the paper on this one. (Chick should have put it in the refrigerator halfway through the 2nd qtr. of game 1) Hey, it was a playoffs that had something for everyone. And now that the fat lady has sung, and the tampon's on Mag's head, it's time to say goodbye. We'll be back next year...and the next one's 4-Chick.
