My friend and fellow Root Doctor member Greg Nagy just released his debut solo disc, which I engineered in my home studio, arranged and sang background vocals on, wrote and co-wrote some tunes, and played a bit on as well.

It features a nice selection of vintage keys including my 1958 B3, 1974 Rhodes Seventy-Three stage, 1960's Wurlitzer 206A electric piano, D6 Clavinet, and an old 1920s Grinnell Bros. upright piano. Special guest includes Al Hill, keyboardist and music director for Bettye Lavette on piano on two tracks and Rhodes.

Samples on the link above. It's a nice record and I'm proud to have been a part of it.

Jim,

I gotta say, this album is great. You would never know it was done in a "home studio," but you're a little different from most, in a good way. I already told Greg how terrific this album is, and I've been meaning to tell you too. So there you go. :thu:

I thought I'd let you KC'ers know about my happy news.

As of last night, 12/1/09 at 7:34PM, we began taking preorders for my long-awaited self-titled solo album. Most of you already know that I've recorded this CD under my stage name of Zak Claxton. As soon as we were able to ascertain that our ordering system was functioning and that our discs would be arriving imminently, we took the site store live. Here it is, if you want to check it out...

http://www.zakclaxton.com/

For those of you who don't know the backstory, I started writing new songs in 2007, intending on having some original material to perform live so I could break out of the rut of doing covers. As the songs progressed, I realized many of them were worthy of doing full rock band-type arrangements and recordings. At first, I thought I'd record the songs myself, as I've always done, at home.

But then, after thinking it through, decided that after 40 years on this planet and 36 years as a musician and 25 years of playing on everyone else's albums, my first one of my own should be something a little more special. So I enlisted the help of Phil O'Keefe as my engineer/co-producer, and brought in Bunny Knutson (primarily on drums, though also on guitar and some vocals) and Ken "Eleven Shadows" Lee on a few songs for keys and some guitar too. We recorded at Phil's Sound Sanctuary Studios out in Riverside, and while it took us only six days to track the album, those six days were spread out over a year and a half, from March 2008 to September 2009. Phil did the final mixes at the start of October, and then, another forumite got involved.

Bill "TinderArts" Plummer is an accomplished engineer... it would boggle your mind to know who he's worked with. I gave the project to him to master, and he did a fantastic job. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Anyway, the end result was that my album came out way better than I could have possibly hoped or expected. It is mostly guitar-centric, since I'm mostly a guitar player, but I think you keyboard guys would dig Ken's organ and electric piano work on songs like "Lines on your Eyes" and "Waiting for This".

So, as I said, we're taking preorders. Discs should arrive in a few days for us to start shipping, and on 12/11/09 -- the official release date -- we'll be going live on many of the online digital download sites like Amazon MP3, Napster, Rhapsody, eMusic, and eventually iTunes (they take the longest to go live, 6-8 weeks after submission). If you folks have any questions about this whole process, I'm more than happy to answer them.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this long-winded, spammy, and self-congratulatory post. But as I said... after 40 years on this planet without anything musical to really show for it, I'm both proud and strangely humbled by finally having this thing done and out there. :)

Oh, this is a hard CD format, Bill. Sorry I didn't make that clear. We're taking orders on the CD now. :)

In addition to that, we're also doing the digital distribution. But I always thought it important to also sell it in a tangible medium as well.

And thanks. :)

Well, the picture above is out of date now (the front picture from the Big O Store changes with each new release; wish I could edit the original post) but I would like to mention that Greg Nagy's Walk That Fine Thin Line is nominated for a BMA (Blues Music Award) for Best New Debut Album.

I'm very proud of the work I did on this release and honored that it is being considered for a major award.

Four posts in a row from the same poster.

Have you thought of advertising in that open pane on the right? :)

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

"Sangsara" is an album I recorded a while back under the name Eleven Shadows. Atmospheric often moody music with female vocals, Tibetan bells, acoustic bowed bass, and more.

Since today (12/11/09) is the official release date of my Zak Claxton album, the online retailers (iTunes and others) are now live.

Here's a direct link to the album on iTunes in the USA. It's available worldwide, so just search iTunes for "Zak Claxton" in your area to get it.

Psyched to see everybody getting their music out there....nice to have these options available to us. It's a cool world in which we live...:thu:

Best time ever to be an indie musician, as far as I can tell. I'm loving it. :thu:

I don't know how many of you do videos to help promote your original music, but I certainly do.

Having a little spare time yesterday, relaxing after the holiday insanity, my ladyfriend and I did a new vid for my song "Lines on your Eyes". Only took a few hours to plan, film and edit. If any of you want some advice on home-brewed videos, I'm happy to help.

Feel free to watch...

Jeff - After seeing that video and hearing "Lines On Your Eyes", I'm going to have to check out the link to the Zak Claxton Album on iTunes. Definitely want to hear more...

I don't have a solo album posted for download/sale, yet. But here are a couple of iLike tracks with my keyboard work, from J. Juliano's project "Dry County":

I'm on "Alabama Clay", and "Lonelytown". Had a lot of fun recording these, a few years back.

Our new live CD, ALIVE & KICKIN', is now available for pre-order at the Big O Store. I'm very proud of this one! It pulls together tunes from all three of our studio releases, but we're in our element playing in front of a very appreciate audience and we stretch and pull those tunes in different directions than their studio CD counterparts.

We like to do pre-orders to help raise funds to produce the CD. We're all self-funded, you know! :) There is a companion DVD available as well for a bit more. Check out the four levels of pre-orders here:

Samples are on the page linked above. I hope you'll consider being a part of this release! Thanks!

Enjoy and thanks!

Yay, lost in a 10 page thread again.

From the READ ME:Forum Policies sticky:

It is the wish of the members of the Keyboard Corner that people do not use it for advertising their products and services to us.

This includes manufacturers, retailers, people wanting to buy, trade, and/or sell gear, people wanting to showcase or sell their music, etc.

There are a few exceptions to this rule:
