Post Your Cool Links Here!!!

Recommended Posts

I've seen a lot of cool links posted by users in threads here. The only problem is that they wind up getting lost in the shuffle of the many topics contained in The Keyboard Corner. Personally, I'd like to keep a collection in this thread, so that we can all have an easy way to find links of interest.

I'll start the ball rolling:

Software Links:

OMS Names Libraries : Got OMS? This is as close as you'll get to support and updates.

Shareware Music Machine : A great place to download music oriented shareware, freeware, and demos.

Version Tracker : Lists most of the software releases and updates that come out on any given day.

Music News:

Digital Pro Sound : News, features, reviews, and more!

Harmony Central : Get your daily new gear fix here!

Music Player Network : Well, you all know this one, but do you really know it? There's lots of coolness here in addition to our forums!

ProRec : Features, reviews, and industry news. Not much about Macs though...

Sonic Control : Articles, links, and news.

Education:

Electronic Music Primer : Learn about synthesis here.

Miscellaneous:

Hearnet : Protect your hearing! Learn how at this site.

Jazz Charts : Psst, wanna learn a jazz standard? Get your free charts here!

U.S. Copyright Office : Download forms, get copyright information here!

Links To Other Links:

Find Sounds : the search engine for finding sound effects on the Web.

i-Music Production Guide : More than just a collection of links, this site bills itself as "The largest data base of music industry related web information in over 50 countries."

The Internet Music Pages : Links to artists, bands, duplication services, managers, legal services, MIDI files, etc.

Li\'l Hank\'s Links : Mostly for songwriters; but hey, we keyboard players can write too!

Lyricist.com : More links for songwriters.

Mac Music : Links of interest to Mac users and/or musicians.

Synth Zone : A GREAT collection of synthesizer links!

Post cool links here that you think others in this forum would appreciate. It would help if you could also add a brief explanation as I have above. No spam please!

Nice thread soapbox! There are a couple of sites I didn't know about!

I'm sure most of you already know these sites, but I've found helpful info at the following:

www.sonicstate.com -some nice reviews and information.

www.vintagesynth.com -good info on vintage synths in general with some good demos for some. I especially like the section that clues us in on what gear artists use. This gives me an idea for a thread...what gear does your favorite artist use.

www.sospubs.co.uk -great uk site with a wealth of info. I've especially enjoyed the reviews of synths from 1994 onward. To save ya'll from searching, the link for this specific section is http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/keysmods9401.htm.

MIDI Musician : lots of links & info

DRUM TRACK ZONE : free drum sample links

motet : drum samples & loops links

Simon Frasier University : this is a good one. i found these ProTools tutorials pretty useful. this link is to a directory, hit "parent directory" for tips on other programs.

Bob Gollihur\'s double bass links : i've said it before: Bob's links site puts all other links pages to shame, regardless of subject.

carrion sound : how to modify children's sound toys

anti-theory : more ways to modify them.

Havlina : this guy makes simple instruments

SPORTS

triangle offense : the details of the triange with shockwave.

latest nba AP photos : this link is the Blazers, there's a page for each team.

REFERENCE

Perry-Castañeda Library

Map Collection : the best place for maps

encyclopedia.com

dictionary.com

Astronomy Picture of the Day Archive : someone else posted this recently- was it you soap?

http://promo.net/pg/ Project Gutenberg original site- there are many ftp sites with classics in several languages.

http://www.netaxs.com/~trance/rapanui.html Easter Island site- this one is fairly and openly donewith lots of photos and links to tourist info, interesting views and counter-views, etc.

http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/ NASA Mars site. "The microbial community we found in Idaho is unlike any previously described on Earth," said Lovley. "This is as close as we have come to finding life on Earth under geological conditions most like those expected below the surface of Mars" Life in Idaho like life on Mars? Hardly a surprise. NASA rules!

http://www.zmag.org/chomsky/index.cfm Noam Chomsky archives. I've heard him quoted by the so-called "Extreme Left" and by the "Far Right", seems to me just a guy who thinks things over and reads up on the info a great deal and doesn't belong to any camp.

And of course http://www.google.com/ is the king of all sites. I google for comparative religion studies, (everything from Scientology to the Rig Vedas) curry recipes, architecture, whatever. A lot of grad students all over the world put their papers up on every topic imaginable, I wind up reading a lot of those- it's great to find for instance a funky beta audio software, read the master's thesis by the author online, then a few years later read his articles in Keyboards and see he's doing well.

Techniques of Musical Composition - This one is good refresher on composition and arrangement. Nice for when you are struggling with a piece and looking for ideas. I go to the page on motivic development all the time.

Microtonal Synthesis - If you are into microtonal synthesis or a just wondering how you can use those tuning tables in your synth, this is very helpful.

Chordhouse - Chords and modes - This where I go when Cameron uses words like Phrygian and I don't know what he is talking about. ;)

Cheers,

Jerry

Okay, it's forums time. I don't want to list any forums that compete directly with these ones...Actually no forums can compete with these ones! ;)

What I will list are forums that support user groups:

User Forums:

Digidesign User Conference : This is the most quoted user forum at our site. Even though they like to ban people, the DUC is still a good place to go if you have a ProTools related problem or question.

KVR VST : There's a lot of support for VST users at this site. This link is to their VST discussion forums.

Sonikmatter Communities : This site contains a wide variety of user group forums. There are forums for Emagic, Kurzweil, Korg, Native Instruments, and Yamaha products here.

Logic Audio User Forum : If you think that the DUC is strict with it's members, you've got to check out this Logic Users' Group forum just for a laugh! This quote by the moderator particularly got me, "If there is ONE more sucky, whinging, whiney post here, the forums are gone!!!!" I think someone needs a little more fiber in his diet! :D

UnicorNation Bulletin Board : To discuss all things MOTU, go here.

Sonic Control : In addition to general discussion forums, this site has forums that cater to GigaSampler users and HALion users.

Korg OASYS PCI Discussion Group : I don't usually like yahoo groups, but this appears to be the only place available that's dedicated to discussing the Korg OASYS PCI card. The Korg OASYS site links to this group.

MacCentral Forums : If you want to talk about Macs without getting into that tired old Mac vs. PC argument, this is a good place to go.

Sorry, I tried to give equal time to PC users; but after a fair amount of searching, I was unable to find a forum dedicated to PC users. Perhaps one of you knows of one?

That's because there are so many "sucky, whinging, whiney posts" there. A lot of these guys need to finally finish a song, and get a life. Some of the things that get nitpicked about are so ridiculous, that somebody should really move out their mom's basement and try going on a date.

They really take away from the useful and valuable info shared among the people who are actually making music instead of crying about some elusive missing feature that is preventing them from completing their masterpiece.

I don't mean that in a bad way.
