dB,

How did this company come about ?

What do you feel makes this monitor different ?

I had someone tell me to listen to songs I write on a pair of normal stero speakers . Just get a feel for what the listener will hear . Make any sense ?

My best set of monitors are my MDR7506's ......Dano

I had a listen to a pair of ADAM S3-A at dB's place. There's a three-dimensionality about them that's hard to describe. "Translation" is a funny creature. The ADAMs have a rep for mixes you do on them translating incredibly well to everything from other monitors to home stereos to car stereos. Yet, they don't "sound like" these other speakers.

I think it's because there are a number of factors in a mix that determine how good it will sound on a range of listening systems. Perhaps GM or RN could name all of them, but I sure as hell can't. It seems the ADAMs allow you to hear them in such a way that even an inexperienced mixer makes better decisions off the bat. There's no magic speaker that will compensate for a lack of good ears, but I found that with the ADAMs, you're not fighting the speaker to hear what you're doing. You really hear what's going on inside the music.

It's always a good idea to test your mixes on a variety of things other than your main mixing speakers. Also, to go into another room and hear how it sounds with the door open. However, if you can't mix condidently without doing this so much that it interrupts your work flow, it could be a sign that you're fighting your monitors.

This page will tell you a bit about what you want to know.

What do you feel makes this monitor different ?

A few things. Mainly the tweeter, which is extremely unique. Also, the material used in the woofer, along with the fact that the box is deeper than most monitors that same size.

This link will answer your questions about the technology involved.

I believe that one listen is worth a thousand words. I'm sure that you'll come and see me at NAMM - then you can hear for yourself. As I've said - they are quite unique. The difference between them and most things to which you have listened in your life is...not subtle. You'll get it right away, even on the trade show floor.

There are those who feel that way. From my point of view, it's a good reality check. After all, one of the marks of a good mix is that it should sound good no matter what system you play it on, right?

There are actually people who quite strongly advocate mixing on crappy speakers...ummm, I mean, an average pair of monitors similar to what most people have in their systems. I am not one of them. I think that your monitors are the most important piece of gear in your studio. Every sound you record or monitor goes through them....

I couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks, Steve!

I couldn't agree more. When Dave played this for me last year, he pulled out a stack of CDs that I thought I knew very well. Needless to say, I was hearing things in some of my favorite mixes that I had never heard before. You should really try them out.
