Intheether
Purely a rhetorical question...well this was announced at the mac expo today...the crazy new imacs. Mats Olsson.
I really, really hope they have good design-concept protection on this one, I would hate to see crappy wintel clones. This one is a winner! If the new iMac is silent (=no fan), I'll order mine real soon. /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later! Squids
Man! Can you believe Apple? I want one of these. I wonder if it's shipping yet. Bizarre that it's called an iMac though. I guess the old design is gone. I though that was cool too. Dan South
The iMac Quicktime video on Apple's site is a must see; it features Seal, Francis Ford Coppola and other luminaries. Warning: you'll be salivating by the end of the presentation. While you're over there, take a peek at the iPod video. Check out the guy from Smashmouth - this dude's a TRIP! Intheether
Apple finally introduces a flat screen monitor. Wasn't that the hot product in 1997 Yeah, but now the whole computer costs less than the screen! Some propellerheads are calling it 'iLamp'. I think they're die hard windoze users who are jealous of how sleek macs are. I am in love, but still paying the apple loan on my g4 (what is it, five years to go?....) Blue
I just saw it on tv and... well I like the Macintosh look, but in this model, I must agree it looks like a lamp from the 1960-70 period. Anyway, it's funny to see. But by now, I'll limit my Mac "dose" to the visual style I use on my WinXP (it tries to imitate the "Aqua" look of the MacOSX -> http://www.themexp.org/view_info.php?id=1230 - the default WinXP visual style is *awful* IMHO). = blue =

When I bought my Apple Flat Panel display, in Spring 2000, it had just dropped from a price of $1,299 - the same price as the new low-end iMac, including a Flat Panel display! At the time I bought my Mac, 600 MHz G4 CPUs, like today's low-end iMac, were unheard of and the contemporary top of the line 500 MHz G4 CPUs cost $3,499! Yeah, the new iMac looks like a lamp (which I don't mind at all), but it's functional and a bargain. If people don't like the look of the CPU, they can always hide it behind the monitor. Love it or hate it, at least it's not a cookie cutter beige box, which was universal for both Macs and PCs before Jobs returned to Apple. It took some creativity and nerve to get us away from that mind numbing straightjacket! As a musician, I appreciate that attitude and approach. http://a1424.g.akamai.net/7/1424/51/b926358f23e275/www.apple.com/imac/images/indextop01072002.jpg [ 01-08-2002: Message edited by: soapbox ] Enthusiasm powers the world. Do you have an Apple Walhalla at home? Do you need a computer for your work, e.g. music, or a design item? My music PCs are mounted in 19" racks and my MACs are mostly behind a wall, all I see are my TFTs, which I like for their good picture, and mice and keyboards. Apple has really not much to offer these days if you cut away the design hype. But I would invest into a new MAC if it would have enough technical facts to motivate me to substitute my old 9600/300. Up to a Gig of RAM and a 100G hard drive. Plus "the lamp" has two Firewire ports and three USB ports. The top of the line model has a 15 flat panel monitor and a drive that reads AND burns CD-R's, CD-RW's, and DVD's. All this from a machine that takes up about as much space as a gallon of milk. You can set it up just about ANYWHERE. I, for one, appreciate the engineering involved in this cutting edge product. I can't wait to slap Logic 5 on one of these little rascals! My main point is that Steve Jobs got Apple, and to a lesser extent the computer industry, to "think outside of the box" both figuratively and literally. However, I use computers both at home and for my work in music production; and while design doesn't make or break my purchasing decisions, I appreciate a creative design in instances in which a computer must become part of the decor. Krakit
What happens when a 15" monitor doesen't do it for you anymore and you want to go to 17" or better? Can you upgrade the monitor on that thing? It looks like something that would be really good for my wife to have (small foot). I don't know that it would be right for me as I'm a very aggressive upgrader.
Jeff Klopmeyer
I love it, and have pretty much decided to buy one as soon as I can. I've owned the original iMac since it came out in '97. It's been a great computer. Even at only 266MHz and with only 128MB RAM, I've been using it for digital audio recording and editing, high-end games, large file graphics, web site construction and damn near everything else except video editing. The model I'm probably getting -- the 800MHz with the SuperDrive -- will kick ass on the G4 tower that's on my desk here at TASCAM right now. Gotta love it. Form and function at its best. Oh, and yes, I'm a Mac fanatic and have used them since 1984, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. In fact, when I went to work at TASCAM, I'd been offered the job of Music/Audio Marketing Manager by Apple but my wife didn't want to move to Cupertino (and we couldn't afford to live there anyway). b_3guy
I like it more tham I ever liked the original iMac. For those of us with crowded desks, it certainly will be a space saver. I think the New iMac will be a bigger winner than the original. Steve www.seagullphotodesign.com

Bucktunes
Cool, but you can't put an OASYS board in it! HA,HA,HA, he, he...ahem.. Sorry, I'm just really enthused about my latest toy! Maybe that's why Korg is blowing them out lately. They can see that the future of computers is no longer rectangular. I like the way it looks. I wonder how long it'll be before the PC clone makers jump on the bandwagon and release something similar. Peace all, Steve ><> Steve

Butt-ugly, translucent plastic Wintel knock-offs appeared about three months after the first iMac came out. Good grief, were they ugly! You'd think that if someone else did the work to come up with the concept that it wouldn't be THAT hard to mimic it without making it look totally stupid.
