Is it worth learning to play the guitar?

As a long time keyboard/piano player, I have always envied the kids at school around the campfire who could play the guitar and sing surrounded by all the girls.

So I have a multipart question:

1. How long would a keyboard player take to learn to play just chords enough to play some popular tunes.

2. How fulfilling would it be musically?

3. How long after learning the guitar would you get the girls surrounding you at the campfire?

1. 3, maybe 4 hours. One for each chord. Three, four chords is all you need for your quest.

2. How fulfilling are six or seven pair of "gimme all you got" -eyes??

3. Why AFTER learning the guitar? Show the girls your vulnerability. Let them sense your struggle for music. Make them feel they are your muse... Show them the blisters you'll get, and let them take care of your "wounds".

It really worked for me! I was in Austria on a camping when I took my guitar and a lot ( I mean a LOT) of girls with me to a waterfall. I played and played and did other things mother nature wanted us to do... Oh boy when we were young, life was sweet too!

:keys: My Music:thx: I always wondered what happened after the fade out?

This one's a no brainer. If you are just a little bit interested in learning guitar you may as well go pick one up and see how far you get in a month. That's one of the great things about guitars, very little initial investment is required! They are cheap, they don't take up space, and they're pretty easy to learn. Heck, I even saw Madonna playing guitar on her HBO concert. Never thought I'd see that :D

You can learn just about any campfire tune in 5 minutes...so give yourself a few hours to get a nice catalog together :)

The only part that will take a bit more time is strengthening your fingers so you don't look like a retard (grimacing is not a cool look).

It is worth learning, it will open up new musical doors...and bedroom doors ;)

You'll probably develop a different musical perspective. Billy Joel often cites examples of song styles that just don't work on piano. Ever play "Satisfaction" on piano? It's not happening. He even wrote "A Matter of Trust" on guitar.

If you're going to play guitar outdoors, I'd suggest an entry level Ovation. Those roundbacks can take a lot more abuse than wood, and the deep bowl models project well. The Martin Backpacker is a fun, inexpensive travel instrument, too.

I learnt classical piano last time .. then I picked up guitar .. it is the guitarist glamour that made me learn to play the piano in a pop way ... wow.. then it was everything about girls .. being a talented young man in my school days really get me flying above to avoid so many girls' chase .. you will never regret to spend time on guitar

live with music, die with music

ya go for the guitar,

at the very least pick up a pawn shop acoustic, that is if your really scepitical.

otherwise go blow a couple hundred on one with a sound you like, do yourself a favour and get a friend who plays to try it; get her/him to check the intonation, and the action.

nothing will slow you down faster than a guitar thats impossible to play :D

the chords will come easy with patience.

LOL, Where did i go wrong? been playing guitar for 15 yrs but never had much luck scoring the chicks when i whipped the guitar out around the campfire...maybe its becuase i used to get the shits when the girls started to sing along...out of time or worse...OUT OF KEY!!! yeeeesh!!!

So now ive moved on to piano...learned jazz standards...that way they can just listen and admire ...and not sing along!!! hehehehe

I'm a two and-a-half chord wonder on guitar. Its easy as long as you avoid the chord F!

Surprisingly so. Its a real acoustic instrument so it sounds good. Plus the technical aspects are different to a keyboard so you get to understand where guitar music comes from at a more intuitive level (I mean in terms of chord progressions, in particular)

I would have to lose 100 pounds and a wife first. The 100 pounds I would be happy to lose. I would also want my back to be in better shape than it is from carrying my keyboard around - your back gets awfully chilly sitting around a campfire at this time of year.

Don't forget when you buy your guitar to keep some cash for accessories - at the minimum, you need some picks and a packet of rubbers.

Don't buy a tuner! Learn to tune by ear. Its very good ear training. Tuning using a tuner prevents you learning to pitch the instrument. You would be surprised how many good guitarists cannot tell which string is out of tune.

I'm a keyboard player and also play a little guitar. It really helps to play more than one instrument if you're composing, the feel is completely different.....go 4 it !

Oh ....about the chick attraction factor : ever seen a keyboard player playing 'round a campfire ? Maybe you should try a laptop ?(can't imagine the looks on people's faces !)

just make sure there isn't a real guitarist around at the same time as your trying to play!

(don't be like me where your best friend happens to be an amazing blues guitarist who happens to know every song under the sun-theres nothing worse than struggling to play a C-D-G song and next thing the guy beside you takes the axe and plays everything and anything the crowd wants)

enjoy

But DO make sure you play guitar better than your drummer! In fact, make sure your guitarist plays guitar better than the drummer ;-)

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

That makes me think. It could have certain advantages with a little preparation.

Hit a wrong note? Pull the key out and throw it on the fire! Have to make sure you used real wood keys, of course.
