virus vs. mini-moog, the eternal question....

Happy almost new year! The eternal question is: What's the sound quality of an Access Virus vs. the good ole' Mini-Moog? Is the Virus an effective stand in for a Mini on mono lead type of stuff? I like what I've heard of the Virus, but I would like to know just how many bases it can cover.

Q:What do you call a truck with nothing in the bed, nothing on the hitch, and room for more than three people in the cab? A:"A car"....

Hmmmm. To MY ears my Roland JP8000 does a fair Moog/Minimoog impersonation. Not perfect, but close enough - and the JP does a bunch of things the Mini cannot. So.....

If the Virus sounds good to YOUR ears, that's all that matters! Does it inspire you to wail, to create? If so, you're set. PEACE - and Happy New Year!

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

Michael:

I have heard some quite realistic Minimoog tones from the Virus, but there will always be differences... if not in the sound, in the myriad tweaks you had to do to get the sound. I've only played a minimoog once, but I was pretty amazed at how everything I dialed up appeared to have a musical purpose. I am not sure how much of that it is due to the synth having 'character' and how much of it is that my ears have been conditioned to love certain sounds.

I am betting that the Virus can quite "naturally" do some beefy leads that nothing else can do..... :)

I have recently been listening to Jan Hammers solo tone... big and round. I thought it was a lovely example of tone, but some of my guitarist friends think it is a shallow imitation of a guitar. That was on a minimoog + Oberheim SEM combination...

I guess comparisons are inevitable but not always desirable. :(

Well said, Mike.

Heck, I can't even make any of my real analog synths sound like my Mini. :D

A VA synth? I think not. I mean, don't get me wrong...many of you have heard me say that I'd like to have a Virus (at some point) because I think it's a nasty little synth...

...but can it sound like a Mini?

I don't think so. ;)

Actually, Andy does a better MiniMoog than any of my other analogs...except for the real Mini, of course.

I'll be very glad when the new Andromedae become available - that synth deserves to live.

I'm wondering how it's gonna look with a turntable built into it... :D

Hey Dave, do you know if it will be any different from your original baby?

No clue. Since they changed manufacturing houses, I imagine it's possible. However, Mike Peake is still at Alesis keeping guard over Andy, so I'm sure that she'll be just fine.

Andromeda does a better Mini emulation than a Memorymoog. The Virus is more or less modelled in a Roland kind of synth.

Unfortunatly VA can't cope with real analogue (yet). To my opinion the design of VA products are all focussed on the lower and mid range of sound - basses, pads etc. At the moment a VA goes for the higher frequencies the lack of power becomes very clear.

But evolution does not stand still: listen to the difference between the first Nordlead and the last one, the Nordlead III. It's huge. One day...

But untill then, I keep my Mini!

:keys: My Music:thx: I always wondered what happened after the fade out?
