A delve into my room revealed...A Yahama FB-01!

Well, I didn`t have to look that hard for it. It had been sitting next to me for about a year now! My father got this syntheziser module(Fb-01) of a friend, which no longer had any use of it. I eventually got it , as my father did not have any use for it either. The sounds, of course, were a big disappointment. The thing is based on FM synthesis, in other words, most of the sounds are crap. It left my mind for quite some time, until now recently, when my interest for syntheziser technology and sound experimentation has literally exploded, and I discovered I had this thing.

Are there any usable features with this module? It is useless as a general purpose syntheziser, but the guys at sonic state said it was very good for basses and weird noises. I will give it a shot, but then, I can`t wait to hear your uses of this antique model.

If I remember the fb01 was based on the 4 operator model, like the dx21. Nothing to get too excited about. I think weird noises are the only use out of it, or maybe some percussive type patches. Personally I prefer much more the 'moog' and 'juno' type basses than the FM ones. Try downloading some patches of the internet, but don't hold your breath :D

Another good way to get weird noises is to cup your hand under your arm pit - with a little practice you can produce all sort of discusting sounds.

I don't recognize this number and Mark Vail does not mention it in his Vintage Synthesizers book.

The first question to be asked of FM gear is how many operators is it? Yamaha brought some entry level units out with only 4 operators. If memory serves, the larger more expensive units such as the DX7 were 7 operators. Anyway the 4 operator units were useless when they first came out and presumably still are. If its a 4 operator unit, you can use it for a base, by putting a vase of flowers on it.

Indeed it was. I got one when it first came out. I agree that most of the programs were pretty useless.

The 6 op FM synths were much more fun.
