Is polyphony important anymore?

I mean, besides for playing live, of course. :P I'm talking about recording purposes.

 

Think of all the great music that was made with synths that "only" had 8, 5, 4, or 2 voices available. Who wouldn't want a Minimoog, and it's monophonic! The reason I brought it up is because I still see people complaining that certain virtual analogs "only" have 8 or 12 voices.

 

Now that we have affordable digital recording with practically unlimited tracks, it seems to me that it wouldn't be necessary to have more polyphony than you have fingers. At least for synth parts. Piano or piano type parts are another issue! ;)

 

Whaddaya say?

I think it goes along with people not knowing how to overdub. It wasn't all that long ago that we would have killed to have 10 voices (one for each finger) and affordable;

forget it. That is not a problem anymore. Now the problem lies with the humans. :eek: Michael

I agree. I can't remember the last time I put my synths on multi-timbral mode for recording. I rather dump the midi track to audio and then switch patches, or use another synth. If it's not a percussion type sound (piano, clavinet), or a pad, I don't care for polyphony that much. It's just gotta sound good, dammit :D
